A portable desk for a laptop computer or similar device. The desk has a rigid panel with a central cutout. Pads are provided on the top surface to receive the computer case to provide friction. Cushions on the underside of the panel engage and stabilize the desk on the user's legs in a sitting position. A mouse pad is hinged to the desk and in a stored position is received in the center cutout and may be deployed to a position adjacent the desk when in use. Heat is dissipated through the central cutout and also along air troughs between the bottom of the case and upper surface of the desk. In one embodiment, the desk may be provided with folding legs which may be deployed to impart an inclination to the working surface. The desk is compact, lightweight and can be conveniently stored in a carrying case alongside the computer when not in use.

A recording device that is coupled to a book. The recording device records, saves and plays back a plurality of discrete messages. An archival control disables and enables the device, thus permitting the user to ensure that no new messages will be accidentally recorded over existing saved messages.

A portable wireless communications device such as a telephone handset having a vertically corrected antenna module pivotally secured to the handset for rotation about a first pivot axis. The antenna module can be rotated into a predetermined orientation, independent of handset orientation. An antenna mounted on the module is oriented vertically when the module is in the predetermined orientation. When the antenna module is rotated for use, a mechanism incorporated in the module support structure automatically rotates the antenna module about a second pivot axis which is substantially perpendicular to the first. This second rotation places the antenna at an angle that compensates for tilting of the handset during use about an axis parallel to the second axis, or along the first. That is, the antenna is shifted by a preselected angle in vertical orientation, typically around 10-15 degrees, in a direction perpendicular to the first direction of rotation to compensate for positioning a speaker and microphone for use.

A docking module can electrically connect a portable computer to a plurality of ancillary support devices. Engagement devices can alternately pull and push the portable computer relative to the housing. A sliding deck projects from the housing and is adapted to underlie and pull the portable computer toward the housing. The module has a plurality of electrically interconnected connectors mounted on panels on opposite sides of a housing. These panels are separately mounted at front and rear openings in the housing. A standard blank panel can have holes formed in it in a variety connector patterns to accommodate a variety of portable computers. Accordingly, the module is readily adapted to a portable computer by selecting a mounting pattern for the connectors on one of the panels, without a need to modify the housing. Also the docking module can be customized by using a standard reciprocating mechanism and selecting a customized mating implement to attach to the reciprocating mechanism.
