A method for designing a knitted textile or fabric, the method includes receiving graphical input from a user regarding a knit pattern comprised of different types of individual stitches to be included in a textile or fabric design. The method further includes graphically displaying a representation of the textile or fabric design. The method further includes merging sections of continuous stitches of the same type into at least one block. The method further includes graphically displaying the textile or fabric design as a pattern of the at least one block. The method further includes applying edge rolling indicators and/or folding indicators to the displayed pattern of the at least one block, where the edge rolling and/or folding indicators respectively and graphically illustrate predicted edge rolling and folding behaviors of a physical textile or fabric.

Modular tool for design of self-folding knit fabrics

A method for modeling textile structures using bicontinuous surfaces includes selecting a virtual scaffold of bicontinuous surfaces defining textile fabrication pathways to model spatial relationships between the pathways and yarns in a desired yarn pattern of a textile fabric design. The method further includes constructing a yarn pathway across the bicontinuous surfaces that form the virtual scaffold. The method further includes removing or releasing tension from the virtual scaffold, thereby allowing yarns to relax and determining a physical property of the textile fabric design.

Direct mapping of local director field of nematic liquid crystals at the nanoscale

Provided are intraoperative devices, the devices comprising a substrate having a plurality of discontinuous cuts formed therein, the plurality of discontinuous cuts being formed such that when the substrate is subjected to deformation, the substrate is capable of deformation beyond an initial state so as to achieve a first shaped three-dimensional state. Through design of the cut patterns in 2D, one can locally control the stretchability and elasticity within the substrate. The substrate can then be deformed into a 3D structure that can provide shape and support to reconstructed tissue in the desired regions while also minimizing operative time and cost. Also provided are related methods of using the disclosed devices; the devices can be used in autologous tissue donation procedures as well as prosthetic procedures.

Aspects of the present invention describe soft imprint lithography methods capable of preparing structural features on surfaces. Disclosed methods include surmounting a deformable substrate, having an original form, with a composition, wherein the deformable substrate is capable of achieving at least one predetermined deformed state; predictably deforming said deformable substrate from its original form to the at least one predetermined deformed state; and transferring at least a portion of the composition surmounting the deformed substrate to a receiving substrate.
