A circuit breaker includes separable contacts, an operating mechanism to open and close the contacts, and a trip unit cooperating with the operating mechanism to trip open the contacts. The trip unit includes a first component having a processor and a first memory storing a first set of a plurality of trip unit settings, and a second component of the trip unit. The second component is separable from the first component or the trip unit, and includes a second memory storing a second set of a plurality of trip unit settings. The second component saves the first set of the plurality of trip unit settings as the second set of the plurality of trip unit settings in the second memory, and restores the second set of the plurality of trip unit settings in the first memory of the first component or of another first component of another trip unit.

A sensor apparatus is for a power bus including a plurality of characteristics. The sensor apparatus includes a housing; one or more sensors each adapted to sense a characteristic of the power bus; and a circuit adapted to transmit or receive a wireless signal. A processor includes a low-power mode and a routine adapted to wake up from the low-power mode, to input the sensed characteristic from the one or more sensors, to output a corresponding signal to the circuit to transmit as the wireless signal, and to sleep in the low-power mode. A power supply is adapted to power the sensors, the circuit and the processor from flux arising from current flowing in the power bus. The power supply includes one or more voltages.

Self-powered power bus sensor employing wireless communication

A first trip unit for interconnection with a second trip unit includes current transformers and potential transformers for sensing current, voltage and frequency conditions of a circuit breaker's separable contacts. A microprocessor-based trip mechanism provides a trip signal, which is employed by the circuit breaker's operating mechanism to open the separable contacts as a function of the sensed electrical conditions and related predetermined operating values. The microcomputer's transceiver communicates with the second trip unit over a passive two-wire communication cable to acquire the predetermined settings of the second trip unit. The microcomputer includes a firmware routine which employs the acquired predetermined settings as its predetermined values.
