A communications interface device () has circuitry for receiving digital signals in the form of characters according to a protocol defining that a communications link is initialized by a series of start characters, each having a specified duration. The receiving circuitry can assume a first state in which characters can be detected, and a second state in which detection of characters is not possible. Power consumption is higher in the first state than in the second state. The device can alternate the receiving circuitry periodically between the first state and the second state with a period shorter than the duration of the series of start characters. In each period the receiving circuitry assumes the first state for a time longer than the duration of a start character. A communications link is established if a character is detected. The power consumption can be reduced considerably without causing unnecessary inconvenience and time consumption for the user.

The present invention provides a system and method for instantly providing a packet-switched connection, e.g., GPRS, to a portable computer of an existing mobile station. According to exemplary embodiments of the present invention, a GPRS identifier is added to a modem's standard AT dial command in order to indicate that GPRS is requested. The modification to the modem's dial command is made in such a way so as to be compliant with the well known syntax rules set forth for that command. By modifying the modem's AT command set accordingly, an existing mobile station's portable computer will be capable of instantly supporting GPRS irrespective of the off-the-shelf operating system in use in the portable computer.

A system and method for initiating a dial-up connection between a remote computing device and a network over an infrared link between the remote computer and an infrared modem is disclosed. A unique protocol defines the universe of commands, responses, and behavior of the modem regarding initialization, response sequence, and switching between data transfer mode and AT command mode.
