The present invention relates generally to the field of molecular biology and concerns a method for increasing various plant yield-related traits by increasing expression in a plant of a nucleic acid encoding a GRF polypeptide. The present invention also concerns plants having increased expression of a nucleic acid encoding a GRF polypeptide, which plants have increased yield-related traits relative to control plants. The invention also provides constructs useful in the methods of the invention.

Plants having increased yield-related traits by expressing a growth-regulating factor (GRF) polypeptide and method for making the same

The present invention concerns a method for enhancing yield-related traits in plants by modulating expression in a plant of a nucleic acid encoding a PATL (PATELLIN) polypeptide, or a PRP38 (Precursor RNA Processing factor 38) polypeptide, or an ADA2 (Adaptor 2) polypeptide. The present invention also concerns a method for increasing Thousand Kernel Weight, total weight of seeds and/or number of filled seeds, by modulating expression in a plant of a nucleic acid sequence encoding a GATA-like polypeptide. The invention also concerns a method for increasing various plant yield-related traits by, increasing expression in a plant of a nucleic acid sequence encoding a WD40 repeat (WDR) 23-like polypeptide. The invention also provides hitherto unknown PATL nucleic acids and constructs useful in the methods of the invention.

Plants having enhanced yield-related traits and a method for making the same

A method is presented for selecting and isolating nucleic acids capable of conferring tolerance or resistance to environmental stress conditions in plants or yeast. Furthermore, nucleic acids, the proteins they encode and their use for the production of plants or yeast with enhanced environmental stress resistance is disclosed.

Protein for use in modifying abiotic stress tolerance in yeast

The invention relates generally to a method for improving growth of plants, under normal and under stress conditions, more particularly under osmotic stress and/or temperature extremes, comprising modifying plant haemoglobin gene expression and/or by modifying plant haemoglobin protein levels in a plant. The invention furthermore relates to a method for increasing yield of a plant, comprising modifying plant gene expression and/or by modifying plant haemoglobin levels in a plant. The invention also relates to a nucleic acid encoding a haemoglobin conferring this altered growth and stress tolerance.

This invention describes the identification of pre-messenger RNA processing as a novel target of environmental stress caused for example by lithium and sodium toxicity. Overexpression of different types of proteins (or protein fragments) from different organisms but all involved in pre-mRNA processing, protects yeast from salt stress, which indicates that any stimulation of this process, independently of its mechanism, may counteract the toxic effects of mineral salts. A similar phenotype of tolerance to NaCl and to LiCl has been observed by overexpression of these types of proteins in transgenicplants, demonstrating the generality of this protective effect in eukaryotic cells and organisms.

Protection against environmental toxicity through manipulation of the processing of messenger RNA precursors

The present invention relates to isolated genes originating from, sugar beet, that are involved in responses to stress situations. The genes were isolated from a sugar beet cDNA library screened in a functional selection procedure with transformed yeast cells that were able to grow in selection medium with high salt concentrations. Subsequently these genes were sequenced and further characterized. One of the genes is a sugar beet casein kinase &#x3b1; subunit, one is a sugar beet dihydroorotase, one is a sugar beet translation initiation factor 1A and two others are of a unknown protein type. All of these isolated plant genes were functional as stress tolerance enhancers in yeast cells and are therefore useful to confer stress tolerance to an organism when transfected herein. More particularly, these genes can be used to render crops resistant to stress situations like osmotic stress caused by salt, drought, cold or frost.
