A boot assembly for an articulating joint is provided, including an inner layer and an outermost layer. The inner layer is constructed from a first material and the outermost layer is constructed from a second material that is different from the first material. The outermost layer at least partially covers the inner layer, and the second material includes a self-repairing polymer.

Self-repairing boot for a constant velocity joint

A constant velocity joint includes an outer race and an inner race arranged within the outer race. The joint includes a cage arranged between the outer race and inner race and a rolling element arranged between the outer race and inner race. The cage includes relatively flat portions on an outer face the cage surrounding window areas that hold the rolling elements in place.

Light weight low angle fixed constant velocity joint and improved packaging

A frangible grease cap for use in a collapsible constant velocity joint. The frangible grease cap includes a body generally having a circular shape. The frangible grease cap includes an orifice through a center section of the body. The grease cap also includes at least one reduced thickness groove on a surface of the body of the constant velocity joint grease cap. The grease cap has a circumferential flange extending from an end thereof. The grease cap includes reduced thickness grooves having predetermined shapes which will peel or rupture when a predetermined axial load is applied thereto. The grease cap is secured to an inner surface of an outer race through any known securing method which also influences when the grease cap will fracture during or completely release during a crash event when a predetermined axial load is applied thereon.

To protect a joint from exposure to contaminants and loss of lubricant disposed within a joint a traditional joint includes a sealing system. Typically the sealing system includes a boot and a boot cover. To produce a more effective joint, the sealing system of the present invention further includes a shield to protect the boot and the boot cover from exposure to contaminants by providing a barrier therebetween. The joint of the present invention includes a shield having several embodiments including an elastomer sleeve, a rigid cylindrical tube and a thermoplastic second boot.

Shielded sealing system for a constant velocity joint

A constant velocity joint has an outer part, an inner part, a plurality of balls, and a cage having windows for retaining the balls in the ball tracks of the outer and inner parts. The cage retains the balls in a plane. Corresponding pairs of outer and inner ball tracks guide the balls. Corresponding pairs of outer and inner ball tracks that are axially straight alternate with corresponding pairs of outer and inner ball tracks forming angles of intersection with respect to an axis. The outer part and the inner part operate in a normal axial range, there being at least one energy absorption surfaces located in the outer extended axial range or the inner extended axial range of either part. The energy absorption surface interferes with at least one of the balls when the joint is operated beyond the normal axial range.

Cross groove hybrid plunging constant velocity joint for a propshaft tuned for energy absorption

A constant velocity joint has an outer part, an inner part, a plurality of torque transmitting balls, and a cage having windows for retaining the balls in the ball tracks of the outer and inner parts. The balls are retained in a plane by the cage and guided by corresponding pairs of outer and inner ball tracks. The outer and inner ball tracks form angles of intersection with respect to an axis where the angles are identical in size but set in opposite directions to one another. The outer part and the inner part operate in a normal axial range, there being at least one energy absorption surfaces located in the outer extended axial range or the inner extended axial range. The energy absorption surface interferes with at least one of the torque transmitting balls when the joint is operated beyond said normal axial range.

Plunging constant velocity joint for a propshaft tuned for energy absorption

A constant velocity joint has an outer part, an inner part, a plurality of torque transmitting balls, and a cage having windows for retaining the balls in the ball tracks of the outer and inner parts. The balls are retained in a constant velocity plane by the cage and guided by corresponding pairs of outer and inner ball tracks. The cage has an outer spherical face guided in contact by an inner bore of the outer part and inner concave face rotatably guided in contact by the convex face of the inner part. The outer part having a normal axial range, an extended axial range, and at least one energy absorption surfaces located in the extended axial range. Wherein the energy absorption surface interferes with at least one of the torque transmitting balls when the joint is operated beyond said normal axial range.

A crash optimized propeller shaft includes a swaged tube to connect ends having disparate diameters. The variable diameter tube creates a stress concentration zone which allows the shaft to collapse or buckle in a controlled and predictable manner in response to predetermined loads.

A constant velocity joint with an outer part having innerly a normal range, an extended range, and a plurality of outer bores circumferentially spaced between a plurality of longitudinally extending tracks, Each track having a bottom spaced between two oppositely disposed sidetracks. An inner part is disposed within said outer joint part, having a plurality of sides circumferentially spaced between a plurality of trunions, each trunion having a top and an inner race. Also, a plurality of rollers each having an inner bore are mounted on said inner race of each trunion, whereby angular and axial displacement occur between the inner joint and the outer joint. Wherein at least one energy absorption surfaces is located in the extended range on the outer part. The energy absorption surface interferes with at least one of the rollers when the joint is operated beyond said normal range.

A vent system for use in a driveline component of an automotive vehicle. The driveline component includes a housing and a cartridge within the housing. The driveline component includes the vent system which has a vent that is secured to the housing at an orifice within a top portion of the housing. The vent system also includes a baffle extending from the housing wherein the baffle is adjacent to the vent orifice. The vent and baffle system also includes a gap that is defined by the baffle, the housing and the cartridge and is of sufficient size to prevent pooling and the forming of a meniscus near the vent assembly. The vent and baffle system is used to allow for venting of high pressures developed during high speed rotation of driveline modules within a drive train system of an automotive vehicle without allowing the expulsion of the lubricating fluid from the oil housing.

A crash optimized bracket for removably affixing a propeller shaft to a motor vehicle. The bracket includes an elongated member having a plurality of weakened slots to allow the bracket and the propeller shaft to tear from the vehicle upon impact in a controlled and predictable manner in response to predetermined loads.

A centering flange for use in mating shafts. The centering flange including a body. The body having a pole extending from one end thereof. The centering flange also including a plurality of lobes extending from the body equidistantly arrange around a perimeter of the body. The centering flange also including a circumferential recess on the side of the body opposite the pole. The integrated centering flange is used for mating a propshaft of an automotive vehicle to a driveline module.

Mounting system for a flexible driveline coupling

A vent system for use in a driveline component of an automotive vehicle. The driveline component includes a housing and a bi-directional clutch rotatably supported within the housing. The driveline component includes a vent system which has a vent that is secured to the housing and an orifice within a top portion of the housing. The vent system also includes a recessed pocket formed on an inner surface of the housing at or near the vent. The vent system also includes a grounding element that is arranged within the recessed pocket adjacent to the orifice in the housing of the rear driveline module. The vent system is used to allow for venting of high pressures developed during high speed rotation of driveline modules within a drivetrain system of a automotive vehicle without allowing the expulsion of a lubricating fluid from the oil housing.
