A system and method for radiation therapy delivery. The present invention provides for optimizing radiation delivery by accounting for the physical attributes of a beam shielding device (,) when determining an optimal radiation treatment. These include, for example, constraining the optimization engine with realizable positioning of plates and/or collimator leaves. Thus, an optimal set of fields and intensity levels for those fields are chosen.

Multi-leaf collimator constrained optimization of intensity modulated treatments

The present invention relates to a fast and accurate method for calculating fluence of a calculation plane over a patient. According to an embodiment of the present invention, only a subset of the collimator leaves are analyzed for the fluence calculation, thus reducing the number of calculations required. Additionally, pre-integrated values of scatter strips, associated with each point of the calculation plane, may be referenced in a lookup table. The use of these pre-integrated values allows the avoidance of adding the fluence contribution of each square on the scattering plane. Rather, pre-calculated values of a subset of the scattering plane (scatter strip) may be referenced and combined, thus reducing the number of calculations required for a final scatter contribution to a point on the calculation plane. Further, the thickness of the collimator leaves is considered in the fluence calculation, thus providing a more accurate model for the scatter contributions of points on the scattering plane.

A system and method for dynamic subspace intensity modulation. Portions around the edges of a multi-leaf collimator-defined static radiation field are expanded or shrunk during part or all of the delivery of radiation at constant velocity. In order to match some or all of the sloping regions (502) of an intensity profile, the individual leaves (41, 42) of the multi-leaf collimator are moved at a fixed velocity over the sloping portions (502) of the intensity profile. By keeping the major portion of the field static and by only moving the leaves at one fixed velocity over a small subspace of the intensity profile, it is relatively easier to know what dose the patient receives and it is also relatively easier to resume treatment since it can be determined exactly how many more monitor units of radiation must be delivered and what the leaf positions were when the radiation was turned off.

In a radiation emitting device, particularly in a radiation treatment device (2), the actual radiation delivered to an object (13) via a radiation beam (1) is adjusted to match the field to be irradiated on object (13). Plates or a collimator are arranged between a radiation source and an object (13) to provide an opening over one of sections (220). A radiation beam (1) is generated and used to treat one of sections (220) with radiation. This is repeated until each of sections (220-230) are treated with radiation.
