A single arch dental device. The single arch dental device includes a dental trough, having a lingual surface, a facial surface, and an occlusal surface. The dental trough is molded to conform to a shape of a wearer's lower teeth. The facial surface of the dental trough has an anterior facial surface and a posterior facial surface. The posterior facial surface of the dental trough is contoured to receive a facial surface of the wearer's teeth. The lingual surface of the dental trough has an anterior lingual surface and a posterior lingual surface. The anterior lingual surface of the dental trough is contoured to receive the lingual surface of the wearer's teeth. A pocket is carved out of the posterior lingual surface of the dental trough and provides a surface into which an anterior and lateral border portion of the wearer's tongue rests.

An upper, palatial appliance and a lower, mandibular appliance may be used in conjunction or separately to alleviate a variety of disorders, improve facial tone, and increase physical performance. The appliances are lightweight, thin, and do not prohibit normal speech patterns when in use Small protuberances are strategically molded along key surfaces of each appliance to stimulate nerves in the tongue and affect forward protrusion. Forward positioning of the tongue dilates the airways of the throat improving breathing while the use is sleeping, playing sports, or talking. It also reduces bruxing or grinding of the teeth. A method is further provided, for adding protuberances to other types of oral appliances, thereby conferring some of the benefits listed above on appliances originally intended for other dental uses.

A tongue positioning apparatus comprising a shield attached to a tongue receptacle for moving the user's tongue forward to provide access to the user's oropharynx during a medical procedure and a tube configured to receive an elongated device secured to the receptacle. The invention also comprises a method of performing a medical procedure including placing the tongue positioning apparatus on a patient's tongue, introducing a device through the tube and performing a medical procedure. Preferably, the procedure may comprise administering a gaseous anesthetic, intubating the patient or performing an endoscopic operation.

Tongue positioning device for medical procedures

An apparatus is provided for positioning a user's tongue to bring the tongue forward, to decrease obstructions in the user's airway and reduce snoring. The apparatus comprises a tongue sleeve which is configured to retain the forward extent of the user's tongue. In preferred embodiments, the tongue sleeve has narrowed inner dimensions at a point along the length of the sleeve. This narrowing acts strength the suction when the user's tongue is positioned within the sleeve. Preferably, the narrowing portions comprise an annular constricted portion. The tongue sleeve has one or more airways which may either comprise complete tubes or air channels formed in the tongue sleeve. A number of airways may be provided. In one embodiment, the airway comprises a tube configured to connect with a positive airway pressure supply means to maintain the patency of the user's upper respiratory tract. A shield means which serves to position the tongue sleeve with respect to the user's mouth is attached by attachment means to the tongue sleeve. The shield means is restrained by the user's lips. In a preferred embodiment, the attachment means is adjustable and may comprise a series of notches along the tongue sleeve which are adapted to receive the shield means. Typically, the attachment means in conjunction with the shield means moves the user's tongue forward from 1 to 4 centimeters. The shield means may also comprise a shelf which receives the user's lips or the user's lips and teeth. In some embodiments, the shelf has extensions to accommodate the user's dental arch. Preferably, an elastomeric, moldable or conformable material is attached to the shelf.

Adjustable tongue positioning device and method

An anti-snoring apparatus comprising receptacle structure configured for reception and retention of outer extent of the user's tongue; shield structure shaped to be received and retained on the tongue receptacle structure and positioned just forward of the user's lip or lips, and attachment structure for adjustably attaching the shield structure to the receptacle structure to permit selective adjustment of the position of the receptacle structure relative to the tongue forward extent whereby the tongue may be comfortably positioned and retained in the receptacle structure; whereby snoring is reduced as the tongue is brought forward, out of the mouth, and incremental forward movement of the shield will move the tongue further forward, with lessened airway obstruction.
