A method for implementing a radiation therapy knowledge exchange starts with searching a database of cases studies and selecting a case study. The selected case study is downloaded. The downloaded case study is applied to a medical case, wherein the downloaded case is applied using deformable image registration to deform reference images of the downloaded case to medical images of the medical case. After application of the downloaded case study, the medical case is uploaded to the network, wherein uploading the medical case allows at least the submitting clinician to download, review, and edit at least a portion of the medical case to create a reviewed medical case. Finally, the reviewed medical case is downloaded and applied to the medical case to create a final medical case.

Radiation therapy knowledge exchange

In radiation therapy, treatment objectives applicable to different identified structures in a patient's body (e.g., a target structure and an organ at risk (OAR)) may conflict due to overlap between the structures. Automated systems and methods can detect and resolve such conflicts. For example, a set of modified regions that do not overlap with each other can be defined, and a modified treatment objective for each modified region can be determined based on the original treatment objectives. The modified regions and modified treatment objectives can be used in treatment planning processes.

Optimizing radiation dose to overlapping structures

A system generally includes at least one computing device having a user interface and a display interface. The computing device is configured to generate at least one desktop that can be viewed by a user via the display interface and to access a plurality of functionality modules that are each configured to receive at least one radiotherapy parameter. The computing device is configured to enable the user, via the user interface, to place the functionality modules onto the desktop. The computing device is configured to enable the user, via the user interface, to connect one of the placed functionality modules to at least another one to commence the generation of at least one workflow output. The computing device is also configured to enable the user, via the user interface, to connect a plurality of input components to the placed functionality modules to finalize the generation of the workflow output.

Systems and methods for generating workflow outputs

A control circuit facilitates providing a user interface to facilitate developing a radiation-treatment plan for a given patient, the user interface comprising, at least in part, an opportunity to select an automated multi-step radiation-treatment plan development capability. Upon detecting a user's selection of this automated multi-step radiation-treatment plan development capability, these teachings then provide for automatically carrying out a plurality of steps wherein at least some of the plurality of steps pertain to other than optimizing a radiation dosing. These steps are carried out without requiring further interaction with the user and yield at least one output radiation-treatment plan that is specific to the given patient and that is administrable as yielded.

Method and apparatus pertaining to automated multi-step radiation-treatment plan development

One accesses information regarding the functionality of portions of the patient's body and then uses that information to optimize a radiation-treatment plan to treat a target portion of the patient's body while minimizing at least some collateral radiation-based damage to non-targeted functional portions of the patient's body. By one approach, the aforementioned information can comprise a functionality model as pertains to at least some portions of the patient's body. As one example in these regards, this can comprise optimizing the radiation-treatment plan such that the planned radiation beams tend to pass through non-targeted less-functional portions of the patient's body rather than through non-targeted portions of the patient's body of greater functionality.

Method and apparatus to facilitate treating a target portion of a patient's body with radiation

Systems and methods for providing radiosurgery treatment to a patient by combining methods from both traditional radiosurgery and radiotherapy are disclosed. A dose sufficient to kill tissue is applied to a target area while a steep drop off, or gradient, is provided at the border between the target area and adjacent areas so that other portions of the brain or nearby structures or organs are not damaged. The treatment plan is optimized by using both measures known in the art along with a new gradient index or curve that indicates the amount of the drop off at the border between the target area and the surrounding tissues.
