An optical isolator includes a polarizer for receiving and passing an optical signal received from an optical signal source to a garnet which rotates a polarization of the optical signal by an angle of 45°−θ°, where 5°≤θ°<42°, and outputs at least a part of this polarization rotated optical signal to an analyzer, having a polarization optical axis at 45°+θ°, where 5°≤θ°<42°. The analyzer outputs at least a part of the polarization rotated optical signal to an external optical circuit which reflects at least a part of the polarization rotated optical signal back to the garnet via the analyzer. The garnet rotates a polarization of the reflected optical signal by an angle of 45°−θ° and outputs this latter polarization rotated optical signal to the polarizer which at least partially blocks it from the optical signal source.

A vortex-based temperature control system comprises a test chamber configured to receive a test article therein, a sensor disposed within the test chamber for detecting a temperature within the test chamber, a first vortex tube coupled to the test chamber for providing a heating airflow to the test chamber, and a second vortex tube coupled to the test chamber for providing a cooling airflow to the test chamber. The system also comprises a temperature controller coupled to the sensor and configured to control an airflow delivered to the first and second vortex tubes to obtain a desired temperature setting within the test chamber.

The optical transceiver module may include a shell that houses first and second optical subassemblies and an enclosure that cooperates with the shell in defining a covering for the optical transceiver module. The shield clip may comprise a body composed of conductive material. The body may include first and second vertical side members. The body may also include first and second shield members that are each configured to receive a corresponding nosepiece of one of the first and second optical subassemblies. The body may further include a bottom member that interconnects the first and second vertical side members and the first and second shield members.

An optical connector includes a base member having a first hollow bore extending from a first end toward a second end, and a recess coaxially aligned with the first hollow bore. The recess has a first internal perimeter and a second internal perimeter. The first perimeter is smaller than said second perimeter. The base member can have a post extending up from a bottom of the recess. The first hollow bore passes through the past and terminates at an end of the post. The post can have an end that terminates substantially in alignment with at least a portion of a termination region disposed between the first internal perimeter and the second internal perimeter.

Embodiments of the invention generally provide an optical component configured to minimize reflectance. The component generally includes an optical housing having a bore formed therethrough, the bore having a central component receiving portion, and a glass block positioned in the component receiving portion in abutment with a fiber receiving bore. The component further includes a fuzzy mount secured in the central component receiving portion, the fuzzy mount being secured via a plurality of extending teeth formed on an outer surface thereof, the teeth being configured to engage an inner surface of the central component receiving portion to secure the fuzzy mount therein.

Embodiments of the invention generally provide an optical component configured to minimize reflectance. The component generally includes an optical housing having a device receiving end, a fiber receiving end, and an intermediate portion, wherein a bore connects the fiber receiving end to the device receiving end via the intermediate portion. The component further includes a split sleeve assembly press fitted into the intermediate portion, and a fiber stub press fitted into the split sleeve assembly, the fiber stub being positioned proximate a terminating end of the split sleeve.

Method and apparatus of attenuating an optical signal without adding extra components is presented. The drive current of the optical signal source is set to meet a predetermined bandwidth requirement and exceed a predetermined amplitude requirement. An optical isolator that is used to prevent back-reflections from reaching the optical signal source is used to achieve the desired amount of attenuation. More specifically, the invention includes controlling the attenuation by tuning an angle &#x3b8; between the transmission axis of a polarizer that is part of the optical isolator and the original polarization state of the optical signal. By increasing the angle &#x3b8;, the amount of attenuation is increased; by decreasing the angle &#x3b8;, the amount of attenuation is decreased. The invention allows continuous tuning of the angle &#x3b8;.

A modular TOSA that is compatible with multiple optical fiber connector standards and a method of making the TOSA are presented. With the invention, a modular TOSA can be made compatible with different connector standards by switching the nose assembly while keeping the port assembly design and the adapter assembly design constant. The nose assembly that is compatible with the desired connector standard is selected from a group of nose assemblies, which are designed to be coupled with the same port assembly but having different connector standards.

Glide heads for the detection of asperities on a storage disc have a thermal transducer oriented along the air bearing surface. The thermal transducer generally is in electrical contact with a circuit to measure the electrical resistance of the thermal transducer. Preferred methods of depositing the thermal transducer involve the deposition of the thermal transducer on the smooth surface of a wafer prior to the slicing of individual sliders.

An improved glide head has an air bearing surface with a flatness of less than about 1 &#x3bc;inch. The air bearing surfaces are formed from the very smooth and flat surface of a wafer, preferably prior to slicing the glide heads from the wafer. Thus, a wafer is formed having a flat surface with a plurality of air bearing surface contoured onto the surface. To form a glide head, a transducer can be mounted on the air bearing surface or the surface opposite the air bearing surface, preferably at the wafer level before slicing.

The active vibration suppression of a slider suspension arm is achieved by including as part of the suspension arm two bimorph piezoelectric elements. A first bimorph piezoelectric element is attached to the top of the suspension arm and acts as a sensor. A second bimorph piezoelectric element is attached to the bottom of the suspension arm and acts as an actuator. The actuator is controlled as a function of a voltage measured by the sensor so that the actuator damps periodic vibrations occurring in the suspension arm.

A combination glide test/burnishing head can be utilized in a glide test/burnishing system. The combination glide test/burnishing head includes two piezo-electric elements, which can be utilized in a passive mode as sensors for detecting contacts between the glide test/burnishing head and asperities on the surface of a magnetic recording disc. Contact between the glide test/burnishing head and disc asperities results in generation of a defect detection signal, which can be utilized by associated test logic to define the location of the detected asperities on the disc surface. The piezo-electric elements of the glide test/burnishing head can also be utilized in an active mode to cause yaw variation in the flight attitude of the glide test/burnishing head, in turn causing a burnishing pad on the glide test/burnishing head to be moved radially into contact with a detected disc asperity. Once an active, burnishing operation has been performed, the piezo-electric elements of the glide test/burnishing head are returned to passive mode, to determine if the burnishing operation was successful in removing the asperity on the disc surface. Combining the glide test and burnishing functions in a common head assembly allows the glide test and burnishing functions to be performed using a single actuator for the glide test/burnishing head, simplifying and reducing the cost of a glide test/burnishing system.

A disk head fly height adjustment method includes positioning a disk head over a surface of a rotating data storage disk and dynamically altering a load point of the disk head by changing an electrical force applied to an active element mounted to a head-gimbal assembly. A data storage apparatus includes a head assembly having a data transfer head coupled to a gimbal and an active element coupling the head assembly and a suspension. The active element is configured to exert a force between the head assembly and the suspension in response to an electrical force applied to the active element. The active element can dynamically shift a load point of a disk head. Shifting the load point can alter the pitch of the disk head and, consequently, the fly height of the head.

A magnetic tape head assembly with enclosed through slots to eliminate an air bearing at high tape speeds and lower operating tape tensions is provided. In one embodiment of the present invention, the magnetic tape head comprises a recording gap, containing read/write elements, across the width of the head and slots exposed to the tape head surface that faces the plane of the tape. These slots run through the head approximately perpendicular to the plane of the tape and are open to ambient pressure at a tape head surface other than the surface facing the plane of the tape. These slots are aligned with the read/write elements along the recording gap.
