A tobacco smoking device comprises a porous mass of active particles adapted to enhance a tobacco smoke flowing over said active particles and binder particles. The active particles comprises about 1-99% weight of the porous mass, and the binder particles comprises about 1-99% weight of said porous mass. The active particles and said binder particles are bound together at randomly distributed points throughout the porous mass. The active particles have a greater particle size than the binder particles.

Multicomponent fibers having an outer exposed surafec include a polyarylene sulfide polymer component and at least one additional component formed of a different polymer. The polyarylene sulfide polymer component forms the entire exposed surface of the fiber and imparts good thermal and chemical resistance to the fiber.

A nonwoven fabric with UV stability having a layer of meltblown fibers sandwiched between first and second layers of spunbonded fibers wherein each layer includes a base resin selected from the group consisting of polypropylene and polyethylene; combined with melt processable additives which are a mixture of (i) at least two hindered amine light stabilizers; (ii) a processing aid selected from the group consisting of hydroxyl amines and phosphites; and (iii) a carrier resin selected from the group consisting of polypropylene and polyethylene. Other melt processable additives include pigments which are added to provide the desired color in the resulting fabric layer.

A nonwoven fabric with UV stability having a spunbonded fabric layer comprising a base resin selected from the group consisting of polypropylene and polyethylene; combined with melt processable additives; wherein said melt processable additives are a mixture of (i) at least two hindered amine light stabilizers; (ii) a processing aid selected from the group consisting of hydroxyl amines and phosphites; and (iii) a carrier resin selected from the group consisting of polypropylene and polyethylene. Other melt processable additives include pigments which are added to provide the desired color in the resulting fabric layer.

A nonwoven fabric with UV stability and flame retardancy having at least one fabric layer. The fabric layer is made of a base resin, preferably polyolefinic, and a non-halogenated melt processable compound that is selected from the group consisting of N-alkyoxy amines and are combined into a homogeneous blend which is then either spunbonded or meltblown to form the fabric layer. A melt processable fluorochemical additive may also be combined into the homogeneous blend to provide liquid barrier properties to the fabric layer.

An apertured nonwoven laminate is produced by a thermal aperturing process by calendaring a carded web of fibers with a polymeric sheet having a lower melting temperature and a property of shrinking under application of heat and pressure so as to bond to the carded fibers and simultaneously pull back the carded fibers away from the calendering points to generate apertures through the nonwoven laminate. In a preferred apertured nonwoven product for baby wipes, a tri-laminate is formed with top and bottom layers containing polypropylene fibers or fiber blend with rayon fibers, and a middle (polymeric) layer of linear low density polyethylene (LLDPE) film material. The baby wipe product provides a significant cost advantage and an improved aesthetic appearance over conventional products. In a preferred apertured nonwoven product for coverstock for sanitary napkins, a film-fiber bi-laminate is formed with a high-open-area apertured top layer of LLDPE film material and a partially-apertured bottom layer including high tenacity, low elongation polypropylene fibers. An engraved calendar roll is used at the bottom side, while a cooler, smooth roll is used at the top side. The resulting bi-laminate has an apertured, smooth, and quilted appearance on the top side, and the bottom side is resilient and fibrous and acts as an excellent acquisition and distribution layer for the coverstock with low re-wet properties.

An elastomeric laminated fabric which is elastic in the cross direction. The laminate includes an elastomeric film having one or two nonwoven webs of carded thermoplastic staple fibers thermally point bonded thereto using heated calendar rolls. The resulting laminated fabric is stretchable by at least 100% in the cross direction without breaking for at least two cycles and recovers elastically. The fiber content of the nonwoven webs is at least 50% high-elongation polyolefin staple fibers having a breaking strain of at least 400%.

An apertured nonwoven fabric comprising one or two outer carded web(s) and a polymeric sheet thermally bonded thereto. The polymeric sheet has a lower melting temperature than the nonwoven layers and a property of shrinking when melted. Heat and pressure are applied to the combination of layers through a calender roll such that the polymeric sheet becomes bonded to the fibers of the carded web(s) and simultaneously shrinks and pulls back the fibers away from the calendering points, thereby generating apertures through the nonwoven fabric. Preferably, the fibers are polyethylene or polypropylene fibers, and the polymeric sheet is a thin plastic film of linear low density polyethylene, elastomeric, or heat shrink material. One outer carded web may be combined with the plastic film layer to form a bi-laminate product, or two outer carded webs may be combined with an intermediate plastic film to form a tri-laminate product. Low denier polypropylene/polyethylene bi-component fibers or a blend of higher and lower melting fibers may also be used. Apertured products can also be obtained with non-thermoplastic outer layers and an intermediate plastic film layer.

An absorbent, flushable, bio-degradable, and medically-safe nonwoven fabric suitable for use as wraps, wipes, absorbent pads, etc., is composed of from 2% to 10% by weight of untreated, water-soluble polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) fibers that are heat-bonded to a matrix of absorbent fibers. The use of PVA fibers in low amounts provides softness, while sufficient wet strength is provided by heat bonding the PVA fibers completely to the other fibers in a two-stage heating process. The resulting nonwoven fabric has a high wet-to-dry tensile strength ratio, good drape softness, and high fluid absorptive capacity. In a method for producing the nonwoven fabric, the PVA fibers are blended with the absorbent fibers, the blended fibers are carded onto a moving web, sufficient water is added to wet the PVA fibers while maintaining web integrity, then the web is heated in two stages, the first with heating cylinders at 40.degree. C. to 80.degree. C., then the second with heating cylinders of 60.degree. C. to 100.degree. C. The fiber web may also be hydroentangled and patterned for enhanced strength and textural properties.
