A system and techniques for managing power utilization in a wireless local area network are disclosed. The system can utilize an infrastructure power management module that is configured to identify and power down one or more unused wireless devices and/or dynamically reconfigure the wireless operation of one or more wireless devices to consume lower power while still operating according to network requirements.

Method to lower the operating cost of wireless network by enforcing low power infrastructure operation

A method and client bridge for bridging clients between a wired and wireless communication network includes a radio transceiver with a register and a controller for indicating to the wireless network that all wired client devices of the wired network are in Power Save Polling (PSP) mode, selecting the next wired client to be indicated as being in Continuously Awake Mode (CAM) mode, storing a Media Access Control (MAC) address of that selected client in the register, indicating to the wireless network that the selected client is in CAM mode, receiving any packets from the wireless network, which are acknowledged using the register, indicating to the wireless network that the selected client is back in PSP mode, and repeating these operations until all wired client communications are serviced.

Client bridge between wired and wireless communication networks

Described is a system comprising a first wireless device and a second wireless device. The first device has access to a packet routing table which includes data indicative of a packet transmission path in a wireless mesh communications network. The second wireless device is communicatively coupled to the first device and has access to the routing table. Upon receipt of a packet by the first device which is addressed to the second device, the first device determines, as a function of at least one of (i) the routing table and (ii) a first identifier of the second device, a second identifier of a third wireless device to receive the packet directly from the first device. At least one of the first, second and third devices updates the routing table.

System and method for data communication in a wireless network

In a network comprising a wireless device, a first access point (AP) and a plurality of neighbor APs, a method is provided for reducing the chances of packet loss when the wireless device roams from the first AP to one of the neighbor APs. For example, when the first AP is transmitting a particular packet of a packet stream from to the wireless device, the wireless device begins to move away from the first AP toward at least one of the neighbor APs. The first AP maintains an acknowledgement counter for the particular packet which counts a number of times the particular packet has been transmitted by the first AP without receiving an acknowledgement (ACK) message from the wireless device confirming successful reception of the particular packet from the first AP. The first AP determines whether an ACK message was received for the particular packet, and if not, the first AP determines whether the number of times the particular packet has been sent is equal to a particular number of attempts. If the first AP determines that the number of times is equal to the particular number of attempts, then the first AP forwards the particular packet to the neighbor APs. Any of the neighbor APs which receive the particular packet, can then format the source address field of the particular packet with the MAC address of the first AP, and forward it to the wireless device.

Loseless roaming via bridging between access ports

A wireless local area network audio and video communication system with mobile units is provided, wherein mobile units are operated in a power saving mode and become active at selected intervals corresponding to the duration of audio and video signals forming audio and video data packets. In a preferred arrangement the mobile units have a digital signal processor that operates at different clock rates during different portions of the intervals.

Described is a method for transmitting a voice packet from a first access point ('AP') to a mobile unit ('MU'), forwarding the voice packet from the first AP to a second AP when acknowledgement of receipt of the voice packet is not received by the first AP and transmitting the voice packet from the second AP to the MU. Also, a system having a first access point (&#x201c;AP&#x201d;) transmitting a voice packet to a mobile unit (&#x201c;MU&#x201d;) and forwarding the voice packet when acknowledgement of receipt of the voice packet from the MU is not received by the first AP and a second AP receiving the forwarded voice packet from the first AP and transmitting the voice packet to the MU.

Method and system for loss-less roaming with wireless bridging

A method for allowing time multiplexing in a wireless network comprising two or more access port and a wireless switch includes receiving a time ordered sequence comprising a plurality of time slots from the wireless switch. Next, the signals are transmitted according to the time ordered sequence. In another embodiment, an access port used in a wireless network that includes a wireless switch comprises a transceiver operable to receive a time ordered sequence comprising a plurality of time slots calculated by the wireless switch. Further the access port comprises a plurality of antennas coupled to an antenna selector; the antenna selector configured to couple selectively the transceiver with at least one of the plurality of antennas based at least in part on the time ordered sequence.

Time division multiplexing for access ports in a wireless network

A communication system comprises a wireless switch, a plurality of wired access ports and a plurality of wireless access ports. The plurality of wired access ports are coupled to the wireless switch via a wired connection and are configured to receive data over the wired connection and over a wireless connection. The plurality of wireless access ports are configured to receive data over the wireless connection from the wireless access port and to send data over the wireless connection to the wired access port. The wireless access ports are further configured to receive and encapsulate first wireless data packets in to first wired data packets based on a wired transmission protocol and encapsulate the first wired data packets into second wireless data packets based on a wireless transmission protocol.
