An airbag textile containing a woven textile having an inner side and an outer side, a primer layer on the outer side of the textile and a gas barrier layer on the primer layer. The primer layer contains a first thermoplastic polymer and has a surface roughness and a plurality of holes extending at least partially through the thickness of the primer layer. The gas barrier layer contains a second thermoplastic polymer and at least partially fills in the surface roughness and holes of the primer layer.

An airbag comprises a textile substrate and a coating on at least a portion of the surface of the substrate. An airbag module comprises an airbag, a gas generator connected to the airbag, and a cover at least partially enclosing the airbag and the gas generator. A process for producing an airbag comprises the steps of providing a textile substrate, providing a coating composition, applying the coating composition to the substrate, and heating the textile substrate. A system for producing a filled, cross-linked silicone polymer comprises a first part and a second part. Each part comprises a polysiloxane compound and a plurality of filler particles.

An airbag comprises a textile substrate and a coating on at least a portion of the surface of the textile substrate. The coating comprises a polyurethane polymer and a phosphorous compound. The present invention relates to an airbag fabric which is woven in such a manner as to possess a cover factor of less than about 1900 but which simultaneously, through the presence of a film (laminate) or coating, possesses an extremely low air permeability. The utilization of such a loosely constructed fabric within airbag cushions has heretofore not been possible, even with the application of standard airbag coatings (such as silicones) over the fabric surface since such coatings with not easily remain in contact over the loosely constructed fabric surface (i.e., the coating would leak through the fabric). The coupling of a low cover factor fabric with a laminate film (or with a coating wherein the cover factor is at least 1600), however, solves such a problem and permits the utilization of inexpensively produced woven fabrics within airbag applications.

An airbag fabric has a finish on a surface thereof, the finish comprising a plurality of particles having a diameter of about 20 &#x3bc;m or less. A process for producing a coated airbag fabric comprises the steps of (a) providing an airbag fabric, (b) contacting at least one surface of the airbag fabric with a coating composition comprising a plurality of particles having a diameter of about 20 &#x3bc;m or less, and (c) drying the fabric treated in step (b) to produce a finish on the airbag fabric.

Coatings for airbag fabrics, coated airbag fabrics, and methods for making the same

Coating compositions, which are used as a monolithic coating layer for airbags. The coating compositions include a combination of urethanes which are blended together. At least one of the urethane components provides gas-retaining properties and the other provides the aging stability. The gas-retaining urethane may be characterized as having high tensile strength at break, high elongation at break, and a 100% modulus less than 1,200 psi. The aging stability urethane has a polycarbonate backbone as result of a manufacturing process in which a polycarbonate diol is reacted with an isocyanate. The resulting coating compositions, when applied as a single layer to an airbag fabric, result in an airbag with good gas retention and aging stability.

Provided herein are specific coating compositions, which are used as a monolithic coating layer for airbags. Preferably, these coating compositions are comprised of urethanes, which are blended together, where at least one of the urethane components is inherently flame retardant and the other of which is a urethane with gas-retaining properties. The gas-retaining urethane may be characterized as having high tensile strength at break, high elongation at break, and a 100% modulus less than 2,000 p.s.i. The inherently flame retardant urethane is the result of a manufacturing process in which a halogenated diol is reacted with an isocyanate, resulting in the incorporation of halogens into the polyurethane backbone. The resulting coating compositions (that is, the blends of gas-retaining urethane and flame retardant urethane), when applied as a single layer to an airbag fabric, result in an airbag with good gas retention, flame retardance, anti-blocking properties, and aging stability.
