Embodiments of a nanohoop-functionalized polymer and methods of making and using the same are described herein. In particular embodiments, the polymer comprises one or more nanohoops that extend from the polymer backbone. Also described are polymerizable nanohoop monomer embodiments that can be used to make the polymer embodiments.

Disclosed herein are embodiments of halogenated nanohoop compounds and assemblies thereof that can be used to for a variety of biological and chemical applications. The halogenated nanohoop compounds described herein exhibit non-covalent interactions that promote their ability to stack and form column-like assemblies having uniform pore size and that do not exhibit structural defects typically associated with other column-like structures, such as carbon nanotubes. Assemblies described herein also are capable of non-covalent interactions with other assemblies and thus can be used to form networks of the assemblies described herein.

The present invention provides the compound [6]-cycloparaphenylene, cycloparaphenylene intermediates (e.g. [n]macrocycles), and methods for making [n]cycloparaphenylenes and [n]cycloparaphenylene intermediates in quantities not previously available. The cycloparaphenylene compounds and their intermediates can be useful in nanotube preparation and in the preparation of other supramolecular structures.
