A method for use in a broadband network includes displaying the cumulative amounts in a hierarchy of network issues, the hierarchy including a summary category including summary values indicating total cumulative amounts of time that the network elements in the at least a desired portion of the network were considered at corresponding qualities of performance, the hierarchy further including a plurality of sub-categories contributing to the summary category, and the sub-categories each further comprising at least one sub-sub-category contributing to the sub-categories.

A method of using a computer to analyze an extended finite state machine model of a system includes providing a graphical user interface that presents a table of rows, receiving data in at least one table row, and determining at least one path through the states and transitions of the extended finite state machine model using at least one of the rows in the table.

Analyzing an extended finite state machine system model

A system and method for rapid panning of graphics images stored as objects in an object records database. The system comprises a computer with memory or memories divided into a several memory regions. The computer is coupled to a monitor for displaying graphics files stored in the database. The memory regions include: a virtual map (VMAP) region including cell maps comprising pointers to linked lists of objects in the database; a backing store region storing a bitmapped image of an entire file, and having the same effective dimensions as the VMAP; a main store region storing a smaller portion of the bitmapped image, the main store region having the same pixel dimensions as a viewing region on the monitor and a movable main store viewing window which permits a view of the subset of the bitmap. When the user pans across the image, the ready, bitmapped image from the large backing store is rapidly copied to the main store and blitted to the screen, avoiding delays due to rendering a bitmapped image from the database or VMAP. Alterations to the image or to the viewing window will update the VMAP and the backing store simultaneously, eliminating update delays to the monitor when panning is executed.

Method and apparatus for graphical panning

An apparatus and method for generating connected graphs for display on a computer monitor. A data structure and virtual map are defined which provide a linked list of objects appearing at any location in the connected graph, the virtual map being larger than the dimensions of the display monitor if the connected graph demands larger dimensions. Commands carried out with respect to any object on the monitor are correlated with the cell maps in the virtual map, which point to the linked lists of objects, the lists in turn pointing to objects stored in an object records database. This provides rapid access to all objects at any given location on the display or in the connected graph. When a user gives a command to create a connection between two objects in the graph, the method generates the shortest connection possible, in terms of both pixel length and arc length for arc-connections, balanced against a minimization of collisions by the connection with existing objects, including other connections. The method is described in connection with the generation of graphical models of finite state machines (FSMs), but is suitable for use in any system where it is desirable to rapidly produce connected graphs and to maintain a minimum, user-definable level of clarity and legibility of the graph.
