A thermoelectric heating/cooling device may include first and second thermally conductive headers. A plurality of thermoelectric elements thermally may be coupled in parallel between the first and second thermally conductive headers. In addition, a resistive heating element may be provided on the second header, and the second header may be between the resistive heating element and the plurality of thermoelectric elements.

Thermoelectric heating/cooling devices including resistive heaters

A thermoelectric structure may include a thermally conductive substrate, and a plurality of thermoelectric elements arranged on a surface of the thermally conductive substrate. Moreover, each thermoelectric element may be non-parallel and non-orthogonal with respect to the surface of the thermally conductive substrate. For example, each of thermoelectric elements may be a planar thermoelectric element, and a plane of each of the thermoelectric elements may be oriented obliquely with respect to the surface of the thermally conductive substrate.

Thermoelectric (TE) devices/structures including thermoelectric elements with exposed major surfaces

A thermoelectric device may include a thermoelectric element including a layer of a thermoelectric material and having opposing first and second surfaces. A first metal pad may be provided on the first surface of the thermoelectric element, and a second metal pad may be provided on the second surface of the thermoelectric element. In addition, the first and second metal pads may be off-set in a direction parallel with respect to the first and second surfaces of the thermoelectric element. Related methods are also discussed.

Thermoelectric devices including thermoelectric elements having off-set metal pads and related structures, methods, and systems

A micro-electro-mechanical device designed such that the actuating means are only mechanically coupled to the optical components. The device includes a substrate, a mirror supported above the substrate, and a rotatory actuator also supported above the substrate. The mirror and actuator are mechanically coupled via a torsional coupling hinge such that the mirror can be angled and/or tilted by electrostatically driving the rotatory actuator. Advantageously, the micro-mirrors and actuator are fabricated from the same layer during the micro-machining fabrication process. In one embodiment, the mirror is rotatable about a fixed rotation axis. In another embodiment, the mirror is freely rotatable.

Articulated MEMS electrostatic rotary actuator

Optical cross-connect switches include input optical paths, output optical paths, and an array of electromechanical optical switches such as movable reflectors that are arranged in rows of the electromechanical optical switches and columns of the electromechanical optical switches, and that selectively move to couple the input optical paths to the output optical paths. Row address lines also are provided, a respective one of which is electromagnetically (i.e. electrically and/or optically) coupled to a respective row of the electromechanical optical switches. Column address lines also are provided, a respective one of which is electromagnetically coupled to a respective column of the electromechanical optical switches. If there are n electromechanical optical switches that couple n optical paths to n optical output paths, less than n row and column address lines may be provided. Preferably, n row and column address lines may be provided. The electromechanical optical switches may be configured upon selection of the respective row address line and column address line, but not selected upon selection of neither or only one of the respective row address line and column address line. Alternatively, the electromechanical optical switches may be configured to be selected except for an electromechanical optical switch that is electromagnetically coupled to the respective row address line and column address line.

Microelectromechanical optical cross-connect switches including row and column addressing and methods of operating same

MEMS structures are provided that compensate for ambient temperature changes, process variations, and the like, and can be employed in many applications. These structures include an active microactuator adapted for thermal actuation to move in response to the active alteration of its temperature. The active microactuator may be further adapted to move in response to ambient temperature changes. These structures also include a temperature compensation element, such as a temperature compensation microactuator or frame, adapted to move in response to ambient temperature changes. The active microactuator and the temperature compensation element move cooperatively in response to ambient temperature changes. Thus, a predefined spatial relationship is maintained between the active microactuator and the associated temperature compensation microactuator over a broad range of ambient temperatures absent active alteration of the temperature of the active microactuator. In an alternative embodiment wherein the active microactuator is suspended within a frame above the substrate, the MEMS structure holds at least a portion of the active microactuator in a fixed position relative to the substrate over a broad range of ambient temperatures absent active alteration of the temperature of the active microactuator. By actively altering the temperature of the active microactuator, the active microactuator can be controllably moved relative to the temperature compensation microactuator and/or the underlying substrate. Related methods of compensating for the effects of ambient temperature variations are provided. Further, an overplating technique is provided for precisely sizing a gap defined within a MEMS structure.

Methods of overplating surfaces of microelectromechanical structure

A MEMs microactuator can be positioned in an interior region of a frame having at least one opening therein, wherein the frame expands in response to a change in temperature of the frame. A load outside the frame can be coupled to the microactuator through the at least one opening. The microactuator moves relative to the frame in response to the change in temperature to remain substantially stationary relative to the substrate. Other MEMs structures, such as latches that can engage and hold the load in position, can be located outside the frame. Accordingly, in comparison to some conventional structures, temperature compensated microactuators according to the present invention can be made more compact by having the interior region of the frame free of other MEMs structures such as latches.

MEMS microactuators located in interior regions of frames having openings therein and methods of operating same

MEMS devices include a substrate, an anchor attached to the substrate, and a multilayer member attached to the anchor and spaced apart from the substrate. The multilayer member can have a first portion that is remote from the anchor and that curls away from the substrate and a second portion that is adjacent the anchor that contacts the substrate. Related methods are also disclosed.

MEMS device members having portions that contact a substrate and associated methods of operating

A variable capacitor is provided having first and second capacitor plates, a tandem mover and an actuator. The first and second capacitor plates are positioned such that the first and second capacitor plates face one another in a spaced apart relationship. The tandem mover is configured to move the first and second capacitor plates in tandem in response to changes in ambient temperature to maintain a consistent spaced apart relationship between the capacitor plates. The actuator is then configured to vary the spaced apart relationship between the first and second capacitor plates in response to an external input. The capacitance of the variable capacitor can therefore be varied by increasing and decreasing the spaced apart relationship between the first and second capacitor plates.

Variable capacitors including tandem movers/bimorphs and associated operating methods

A microelectromechanical structure capable of switching optical signals from an input fiber to one of two or more output fibers. In one embodiment, the MEMS optical cross-connect switch comprises a first microelectronic substrate having a pop-up mirror disposed on the surface of the substrate and a rotational magnetic field source, such as a variably controlled magnetic field source. The rotational magnetic field source allows for reliable actuation of the pop-up mirror from a non-reflective state to a reflective state. Additionally the invention is embodied in a MEMS optical cross-connect switch having a first microelectronic substrate having a pop-up mirror disposed on the surface of the substrate and a positioning structure disposed in a fixed positional relationship relative to the first substrate. The positioning structure may comprise a positioning structure extending from a second microelectronic substrate that is in a fixed positional relationship relative to the first microelectronic substrate. The positioning structure serves to restrict further movement of the pop-up mirror when the pop-up mirror has been actuated into a reflective state.

MEMS optical cross-connect switch

In embodiments of the present invention, a microelectromechanical actuator includes a beam having respective first and second ends attached to a substrate and a body disposed between the first and second ends having a sinuous shape. The body includes a portion operative to engage a object of actuation and apply a force thereto in a direction perpendicular to the beam responsive to at least one of a compressive force and a tensile force on the beam. The sinuous shape may be sinusoidal, e.g., a shape approximating a single period of a cosine curve or a single period of a sine curve. The beam may be thermally actuated or driven by another actuator. In other embodiments, a rotary actuator includes first and second beams, a respective one of which has first and second ends attached to a substrate and a body disposed between the first and second ends. Each body includes first and second oppositely inflected portions. The bodies of the first and second beams intersect one another at points at which the first and second oppositely inflected portions of the first and second bodies meet. The bodies of the first and second beams are operative to engage the object of actuation and rotate the object of actuation around the point of intersection responsive to at least one of compressive force and tensile force on the first and second beams. Related methods are also described.

Microelectromechanical actuators including sinuous beam structures

A MEMS electrical cross-point switch is provided that includes a microelectronic substrate, a magnetic element attached to the microelectronic substrate that is free to move in a predetermined direction in response to a magnetic field and an electrical element connected to the magnetic element for movement therewith to selectively switch electric current. In one embodiment the magnetic element and the electrical element are connected via a tethering device that acts as a platform for the magnetic and electrical elements. The electrical cross-point switch may also comprise a clamping element that serves to lock the switch in an open or closed position to circumvent the magnetic actuation of the switch. In another embodiment, the invention provides for a MEMS electrical cross-point switching array that includes a microelectronic substrate, a magnetic field source in circuit with said microelectronic substrate, a plurality of first and second electrical lines disposed on the microelectronic substrate in an array formation, and a plurality of the in-plane MEMS electrical cross-point switches as described above disposed at the cross point of a first and second electrical line. In one embodiment the array is configured in a N&times;N or N&times;M array having a series of crossing first and second electrical load lines. In another configuration the array has a series of first electrical load lines that extend radially from a central point of reference and a series of second electrical load lines that extend outward, in spoke-like fashion, from the central point of reference.

Mems magnetically actuated switches and associated switching arrays

Microelectromechanical actuators include a substrate, spaced apart supports on the substrate and a thermal arched beam that extends between the spaced apart supports and that further arches upon heating thereof, for movement along the substrate. One or more driven arched beams are coupled to the thermal arched beam. The end portions of the driven arched beams move relative to one another to change the arching of the driven arched beams in response to the further arching of the thermal arched beam, for movement of the driven arched beams. A driven arched beam also includes an actuated element at an intermediate portion thereof between the end portions, wherein a respective actuated element is mechanically coupled to the associated driven arched beam for movement therewith, and is mechanically decoupled from the remaining driven arched beams for movement independent thereof.

Microelectromechanical actuators including driven arched beams for mechanical advantage

Improved microelectromechanical structures include spaced-apart supports on a microelectronic substrate and a beam that extends between the spaced-apart supports and that expands upon application of heat thereto to thereby cause displacement of the beam between the spaced-apart supports. A heater, located on the beam, applies heat to the beam and displaces with the beam as the beam displaces. Therefore, heat can be directly applied to the arched beam, thereby reducing thermal loss between the heater and the arched beam. Furthermore, an air gap between the heater and arched beam may not need to be heated, thereby allowing improved transient thermal response. Moreover, displacing the heater as the arched beam displaces may further reduce thermal loss and transient thermal response by reducing the separation between the heater and the arched beam as the arched beam displaces.

Microelectromechanical systems including thermally actuated beams on heaters that move with the thermally actuated beams

A MEMS actuator is provided that produces significant forces and displacements while consuming a reasonable amount of power. The MEMS actuator includes a microelectronic substrate, spaced apart supports on the substrate and a metallic arched beam extending between the spaced apart supports. The MEMS actuator also includes a heater for heating the arched beam to cause further arching of the beam. In order to effectively transfer heat from the heater to the metallic arched beam, the metallic arched beam extends over and is spaced, albeit slightly, from the heater. As such, the MEMS actuator effectively converts the heat generated by the heater into mechanical motion of the metallic arched beam. A family of other MEMS devices, such as relays, switching arrays and valves, are also provided that include one or more MEMS actuators in order to take advantage of its efficient operating characteristics. In addition, a method of fabricating a MEMS actuator is further provided.
