The present invention provides energy curable thixotropic compositions comprising low amounts of 2,2,4-trimethyl-1,3-pentanediol isobutyrate (Texanol); 2,2,4-trimethyl-1,3-pentanediol diisobutyrate (TXIB); or dipropylene glycol butyl ether (DPGBE mixes isomers), or combinations thereof. The addition of the selected solvents in amounts of about 0.5 wt % to 3 wt % reduced the low shear rate viscosity of the energy curable thixotropic compositions.

The present invention provides alkoxylated polymers. The alkoxylated polymers have two or more alkoxylated sites. The alkoxylated polymers can comprise any monomers and/or oligomers that contain one or more functional groups with an active hydrogen. The alkoxylated polymers are useful in any application for which polymers are generally used. For example, the alkoxylated polymers are useful as additives in ink and coating compositions.

Described herein is a polar non-aqueous dispersion comprising polar polymeric microparticles in a polar non-aqueous medium, the polar polymeric microparticles being insoluble in the medium and being produced by dispersion polymerization of vinyl monomers such as acrylate monomers in the medium in the presence of a polymeric acrylic stabilizer. Inks, coatings and overprint varnishes are formulated that employ the polar non-aqueous dispersion. Such inks, etc., exhibit superior chemical resistance properties, for example in one-part and two-part systems.

The present invention provides water-based energy curable compositions that exhibit improved printability, adhesion, opacity, and wash-up properties. The compositions comprise one or more inert water-based polyurethane resins and one or more water-based phosphate esters. Addition of the inert polyurethane resins and phosphate esters improves adhesion of the energy curable compositions to a variety of substrates.

Described herein are water-based inks that comprise water, a water miscible solvent having a boiling point of about 56&#xb0; C. to about 98&#xb0; C., and a latex. In one aspect, the water miscible solvent comprises about 10 wt % to about 30 wt % of the ink (based on the total weight of the ink). In another aspect, the latex is an alcohol-tolerant latex that exhibits limited or no particle size increase in the presence of alcohol. Further described herein are articles printed with the inks, and methods of printing with the inks.

Provided are web-offset lithographic ink compositions that contain an alkyl thioether surfactant, an alkoxylated modified rosin, or a combination thereof. The ink compositions can be oil-based inks or water-based inks that can be radiation-curable. The resulting ink compositions can be used in web-offset lithographic printing to substantially reduce or eliminate the ink feedback and ink build-up that occurs during printing. Also provided are methods for reducing or eliminating ink feedback and build-up during lithographic printing processes.

The polyester resins of the present invention are particularly, but not exclusively, suitable to enhance the adhesion between a printing ink or coating composition and a substrate, especially a plastic substrate, to which it is applied. The polyester adhesion promoters of the invention are compatible with urethane-based inks and coating compositions.

Described herein are capacitive devices and methods for producing same using printing methods such as flexography, gravure, offset, lithography, etc. The capacitive devices are formed from printing conductive inks, non-conductive inks, masking ink layers, graphic artwork layers, and overprint layers on a substrate. Interaction between a conductive ink layer of the capacitive device with a touch screen device of a computer, tablet, smart phone, etc. causes a capacitive effect that allows information coded in capacitive device to be read, leading to an activity such as the download of content to the device having the touch screen.

The present invention is directed to energy curable offset conductive inks and hybrid offset conductive ink compositions that contain an oxidative curable ink and the energy curable offset conductive ink. Provided are overprint varnish (OPV) compositions containing high viscosity essentially non-aqueous dispersions that include acrylic core/shell polymer particles in a non-aqueous solvent such as mineral oil. Also provided are methods of coating a substrate with an OPV containing the non-aqueous dispersions to improve the properties of the OPV when used to coat a substrate, such as improved rub resistance, resistance to yellowing, and desirable gloss values.

Lithographic printing inks are described, which are characterized by the inclusion of both water, in a substantially emulsified form, and inorganic filler. Inks of the present invention show improved printing properties in offset lithography, including improved transfer, reduced piling and improved mileage. They also offer cost advantages over currently available inks and the ability to minimize or eliminate entirely mineral oil from their compositions. The inks of the present invention may be used in both web-based print processes including coldset and heatset, as well as in sheetfed printing. The inks may be dried to a durable ink film at ambient temperature, with thermal energy or with actinic or electron beam radiation, or with any combination thereof.

Provided are high viscosity essentially non-aqueous dispersions containing acrylic core/shell polymer particles in a non-aqueous solvent; sheetfed, heatset and coldset lithographic ink compositions containing the dispersions; and methods of printing with ink containing the dispersions to improve the setting and drying properties and rub resistance of sheet fed offset, heatset and coldset lithographic inks. The lithographic inks containing the dispersions set quickly enough to allow processing of printed sheets soon after printing.

Compositions and methods to improve the setting properties and rub resistance of printing inks

The use of non aqueous dispersions NADs has enabled the development of fast setting sheet fed inks, for example. However either due to residual monomers or fractions of initiators, these NAD's have an objectionable odor. A chemical means of dramatically reducing the odor of the NAD's is thus presented. In exemplary embodiments of the present invention, such a chemical treatment can include an amine/alkali mixture in a coupling solvent. In exemplary embodiments of the present invention, the coupling solvent can be one or more of an alcohol, glycol or glycol ether, such as, for example, isopropyl alcohol. In exemplary embodiments of the present invention the amine can be an alkyl amine, such as, for example, diethyl amine, or various other amines, whether alone or in combination. In exemplary embodiments of the present invention, the alkali can be one or more of sodium hydroxide, potassium hydroxide and ammonium hydroxide, whether alone or in any combination thereof.

Method for odor reduction of non-aqueous dispersions

A non aqueous dispersion is disclosed containing: a shell polymer; a core polymer, and a continuous phase solvent, wherein said shell polymer is soluble and said core polymer is insoluble in the continuous solvent. Also disclosed is a method for improving the setting properties of a sheet fed offset ink by adding to the ink the above non aqueous dispersion.
