Techniques for managed services of cloud systems to perform inventory discovery of computing instances with particular configurations across user accounts in an organization, and across regions in the cloud systems. Cloud systems offer managed services that automate the management of configurations of computing instances on behalf organizations. To perform cross-account discovery of inventory information for these computing instances, the managed services often harness other internal cloud services, such as internal data-integration services and query services. However, some of these internal cloud services are not available in all the geographic regions of the cloud system, and due to these dependencies, the managed services are in turn not available in all regions. Techniques and architectures are described herein for managed services to perform the cross-account inventory discovery such that these managed services can be made available across all regions, and for launches of new regions in the cloud system.

Managed discovery of inventory information for user accounts

Techniques for a license manager service of a cloud system to activate and run licensed applications in VPCs with peering connections (or 'peered VPCs') established with configured VPCs. The license manager service may provide users with the ability to select a particular VPC to be configured to use licensed applications, and may further allow users to enable peered VPCs of the configured VPC to use licensed applications. The license manager service may provide a managed experience for activating the licenses for the applications running on computing resources in the configured VPCs and peered VPCs. The license manager service may launch licensed applications on virtual resources in a user's configured VPC and peered VPCs, manage the process for activating the licensed applications with third-party providers, and provide the user with access to licensed applications that have been activated and configured by the license manager service in configured and peered VPCs.

Managed activation of licensed software for resources in peered networks

Techniques for a license manager service of a cloud system to provide users with the ability to activate and run licensed applications in the cloud system. Manually tracking the usage of software licenses for licensed applications can be cumbersome and error-prone. Further, the process of activating the licenses for third-party applications may be difficult or impossible depending on the activation protocols and procedures put in place by the application providers. The license manager may provide users with the ability to activate and use licensed applications, and may further provide users with a managed experience for activating the licenses for the applications. The license manager may launch licensed applications on virtual resources in a user's VPC, manage the process for activating the licensed applications with third-party providers, and provide the users with access to licensed applications that have been activated and configured by the license manager.

Managed activation of licensed software

Techniques for host resource group sharing in a provider network are described. A resource share is made of a host resource group made up of dedicated hosts in the provider network. The share provides access to the host resource group of a primary account with one or more other principals—e.g., user accounts, an organization, or a group of users. The other principals can launch compute instances into the host resource group, which may cause the automatic provisioning of new hosts into the host resource group, of the primary account, as needed.

Shared dedicated host resource groups in a provider network

Techniques for automated defragmentation of licensed resources in a provider network are described. A defragmentation service in a provider network can detect the existence of intra-host fragmentation and/or inter-host fragmentation among host computing devices belonging to a host resource group of hosts dedicated to particular users. The defragmentation service can cause instances to be migrated to new locations within the host resource group to reduce or eliminate the fragmentation, allowing for hosts to beneficially be removed from the host resource group. The defragmentation service may determine which instances to be moved based on considerations involving software licenses associated with the host computing devices.

Defragmentation of licensed resources in a provider network

Techniques for managing customer license agreements are described. In one embodiment, a user-specified resource metric of a license model and a user-specified limit of the user-specified resource metric are obtained. A request for permission to launch a new compute resource at a computing device of the provider network is obtained from a service within a provider network. The new compute resource having a property that is an amount of the user-specified metric. A determination is made that a launch of the new compute resource would cause the user-specified limit to be exceeded, and the request the request to launch the new compute resource is denied.

Rule-based resource management system

Natural language commands are automatically mapped to application programming interface (API) functions of web-based services. Grammatical rules may be applied to the APIs in order to classify the actions of the APIs, in some embodiments, generating mappings between the natural language commands and the APIs. When a natural language input is received and a natural language command identified form the natural language input, the corresponding API indicated in the mapping may be invoked.

Automatically mapping natural language commands to service APIs

At a configuration discovery service, a unique service-side identifier is generated for a configuration item based on analysis of a data set obtained from a first data source. A determination is made that a second data set, which does not contain the service-side identifier and is obtained from a different data source, also includes information pertaining to the same configuration item. A coalesced configuration record for the configuration item is prepared. The coalesced configuration record is stored at a repository and used to respond to a programmatic query.

Intelligent configuration discovery techniques

Configuration items of an environment for a client of a configuration discovery service are identified. A view category is selected for the target environment. A set of configuration items for which information regarding recent configuration changes is to be provided is identified. Data which can be used to display a graphical representation of at least a portion of the environment and the configuration changes is transmitted.
