A host may not have a large enough internal non-volatile memory to store generated data, such as video. In such situations, the host can store the data in an external data storage device, such as an external solid-state drive (SSD). However, if the storage rate of the external data storage device drops below the rate at which the host is generating and sending the data to the external data storage device, data loss can occur. To help avoid this situation, the host can use a dual-write method in which a portion of the data is both sent to the external data storage device for storage and written in the host's internal non-volatile memory. That way, if the portion of the data sent to the external data storage device is lost, the portion of the data can be resent from the host's internal non-volatile memory.

Host and dual write method for avoiding data loss when writing to an external data storage device

A computer implemented method for transferring data from a user device to a non-volatile storage medium of a data storage device via a wireless peer-to-peer communication channel. The method executing on a user device comprising a user interface and memory store. The method comprises establishing a wireless peer-to-peer control channel between the user device and the data storage device. In response to receiving, via the user interface, a request to transfer data from the user device to the storage medium, sending, to the data storage device, via the control channel, a command to enable control channel access, and performing a secure unlocking process to transition the data storage device to a control channel access state. In response to successfully completing the secure unlocking process, obtaining write data, and sending, to the data storage device, via the control channel, a write command comprising the write data.

Method and device for facilitating secure data transfer and storage

Techniques described herein may be used for reducing the usage of sensors during thermal throttling in storage devices. A memory of a storage device may store map tables, each map table associated with a type of host command, each map table including entries, each entry corresponding to an initial temperature level and characteristics of a host command, and each entry indicating a change in temperature relative to the initial temperature level. A controller of the storage device may monitor operations for commands from the host system, obtain an initial temperature value from one or more temperature sensors, select entries from the map tables, based on characteristics of the operations and the initial temperature value, predict a current temperature based on the one or more entries, and in accordance with a determination that the current temperature exceeds a predetermined threshold, trigger one or more corrective actions for thermal throttling.

Simulating multi-sensor environment for thermal throttling in storage device

A key-value storage device may perform an integrity check on a key and/or a value in a key-value pair, prior to transmitting the value from a memory device to a requestor. When the storage device receives a write command to store the value in the memory device, a processor in the storage device may generate authentication data from the key and/or the value in the write command. The processor may store the authentication data and the value in the memory device. When the processor later receives a read command to retrieve the value from the memory device, the processor may perform the integrity check on the key and/or the value using the authentication data.

Data integrity in key value solid-state drives

A storage device executes an adaptive flash interface module (FIM) protocol to optimize power consumption. The storage device includes a memory device including sets of dies and a set of FIMs. A FIM connects a controller to a set of dies on the memory device. The controller determines the mode of operation of the storage device and initializes the storage device in a first operating mode or a second operating mode. The controller makes at least one FIM non-operational when operating in the second operating mode and uses an operational FIM to communicate with multiple sets of dies on the memory device. The controller also makes a given number of FIMs operational when operating in the first operating mode and uses the operational FIM to communicate with a set of dies on the memory device. Operational FIMs accommodate a data rate for the mode of operation of the storage device.

Dynamic flash interface module (FIM) optimization

A process for reliably erasing data from a solid-state drive (SSD) includes first, prior to user data being stored on the drive, generating a restore image of information stored on the drive which characterizes a restore state of the drive, such as a factory image. Then, imparting energy to the drive to promote electrons representing bits in corresponding memory cells to exit the cells, such as imparting thermal energy or high-energy electromagnetic radiation to the drive. Also, generating a set of quantitative data for verifying erasure of the data for presentation to the user helps ensure trust in the data wipe process. The drive may also be electrically erased prior to imparting energy to the SSD, to provide another level of confidence in the data wipe process. The restore image may then be loaded to the necessary locations on the wiped drive to restore drive functionality.

Solid-state drive secure data wiping for reuse and recycling

In one embodiment, a data storage device comprises a memory and one or more processors. The one or more processors, individually or in combination, are configured to: provide a host with an indication of an amount of data to cache in a memory of the host; receive, from the host, the amount of data for storage in the memory of the data storage device, wherein the host is configured to cache the amount of data in the memory of the host as a secondary copy; and write only a single copy of the amount of data in the memory of the data storage device, wherein the secondary copy stored in the memory in the host is available in an event of a failure to correctly write the single copy in the memory of the data storage device. Data storage device and method for application-defined extended data recovery

A storage device may optimize pre-cache operations based on patterns associated with previously received data requests from accelerator cores in the storage device. The storage device may also optimize pre-cache operations by analyzing the usage of cache data by the accelerator cores. The accelerator cores may perform computational storage functions. The storage device may also include a storage core to receive data requests from an accelerator core to access data stored on a memory device. The storage core may learn a request pattern associated with the data requests and analyze usage of previously cached data by the accelerator core. The storage device may use the request pattern and the usage of previously cached data to optimize its pre-cache operations.

Proactive caching of data for accelerator cores in a storage device

A multi-protocol storage device avoids entering a thermal shutdown mode by switching between protocols. The storage device communicates with a host in a first mode using a first protocol. The storage device receives a temperature request from the host, monitors its temperature, and transmits a response to the host when the temperature of the storage device meets a predefined temperature that is below a thermal shutdown threshold. The storage device receives a thermal throttling instruction from the host and switches to a second mode to communicate with the host using a second protocol that uses less resources than the first protocol. The storage device performs thermal throttling until the temperature of the storage device reaches a normal temperature zone. When the temperature of the storage device returns to the normal temperature zone, the storage device returns to the first mode.

Thermal recovery in multi-protocol devices

A data storage device is configured to boost either capacity or performance using a set of reserve memory blocks. The data storage device includes a storage media and control circuitry. The storage media includes first set of memory blocks at a first capacity level and a first performance level and a reserve set of memory blocks. The control circuitry is configured to, in response to receiving a selection of a first storage mode from a user, allocate the reserve set of memory blocks to provide a second performance level greater than the first performance level. The control circuitry is further configured to, in response to receiving a selection of a second storage mode from the user, allocate the reserve set of memory blocks to provide a second capacity level greater than the first capacity level.

Selectable performance boost for storage devices

Instead of all the NAND memory having asynchronous independent plane read (AIPR) enabled, a system utilizes a master-SSD to route data to multiple client SSDs via a controller memory buffer (CMB) according to the underlying NAND hardware (HW) of each of the client SSDs. The master-SSD will also analyze the application data retrieval of the logical data that is to be routed. The system comprises SSDs with AIPR NAND circuitry and SSDs with non-AIPR NAND circuitry. The system further comprises the master-SSD that will route data to any of the SSDs in the system based on the data retrieval type (sequential or random). Each of the SSDs can be of a different type beyond the NAND chip, such as HW IPs or specific firmware (FW) that is tuned towards specific data routing and retrieval requirements.

Data routing in networked SSDs

A data storage device and method for host-assisted deferred defragmentation and system handling are provided. In one embodiment, the data storage device comprises a memory and a controller. The controller is configured to receive, from a host, a plurality of write commands and a grouping identifier associated with the plurality of write commands, wherein the plurality of write commands comprise a plurality of non-sequential logical block addresses and a plurality of sequential segments of a file; and in response to the grouping identifier being associated with the plurality of write commands, execute the plurality of write commands by storing the plurality of sequential segments of the file sequentially in the memory even though the logical block addresses associated with the segments of the file are non-sequential. Other embodiments are possible, and each of the embodiments can be used alone or together in combination.

Data storage device and method for host-assisted deferred defragmentation and system handling

Aspects of a storage device are provided for efficient handling of logical metablock formation based on a heat distribution within the storage device. The storage device includes a plurality of memory dies each including a physical block, and a controller which forms a logical metablock from the physical blocks based on a location of each of the memory dies with respect to the controller. The controller stores a mapping of heat credit points to each of the physical blocks, where each of the heat credit points are associated with a respective heat level. The controller forms logical metablocks from the physical blocks based on the mapping. For instance, the controller forms different logical metablocks from physical blocks based on respective heat levels associated with memory dies including those blocks. As a result, efficient logical block formation may be achieved without significant complexity in firmware implementation.

Die location based logical block formation and handling

Systems, video cameras, and methods for predictive adjustment of multi-camera surveillance video data capture are described. A plurality of networked video camera is deployed with known spatial relationships and non-overlapping fields of view among cameras. When a video event is detected from video data for one of the video cameras, a video capture update message is selectively sent to other video cameras to modify their video capture operations. For example, an object detected by one camera may trigger adjustment of video capture operating parameters for cameras in a direction of travel of the object before it has entered the field of view of those other cameras.

Predictive adjustment of multi-camera surveillance video data capture

A key-value storage device may perform error-handling on key-value data stored in a memory device. The key-value storage device may be communicatively coupled to a host device that may transmit read commands to retrieve the key-value data stored on the memory device. In response to a read command, the storage device may retrieve the key-value data from the memory device. If during retrieval the storage device identifies that a portion of the key-value data is irretrievable, the storage device may perform an error-handling operation on the key-value data. Depending on a key-value data type, the storage device may perform an error concealment operation and return complete key-value data or a partial error-handling operation and return partial key-value data to the host.
