Embodiments can relate to an improved hydroflux, additive or electroless plating assisted densification cold sintering process to densify powdered metals at lower compaction pressures and lower temperatures (e.g., 520 MPa and 140° C.). The process can involve inducing dissolution precipitation mechanisms at powder interfaces by introducing a transport phase (formed by the introduction of water during the process to suppress melting temperatures) that is not an aqueous solution. Particle interfaces in the cold sinter fuse together by the presence of the additional transport phase, thereby reducing the temperatures and pressures needed for compaction. Some embodiments involve the use of elements to form a eutectic at the desired low temperature, thereby stabilizing certain crystal structure shapes of isometric crystal systems, inducing rapid densification, and facilitating pore smoothing. Embodiments of the process can be used to generate a green compact via sintering that exhibits improved green strength.

Cold sintering process for densification and sintering of powdered metals

A process for characterizing micro, meso, and/or macro porous materials is provided. The process includes providing a volumetric and/or gravimetric adsorption system, the adsorption system having an adsorption chamber and a probe gas at a first temperature. In addition, a porous material to be characterized is provided and placed within the adsorption chamber. Thereafter, a porosimetry run is conducted on the porous material. The porosimetry run includes: (a) selecting an uptake target value; (b) selecting a target interval bounding the target uptake target value; (c) adjusting pressure within the adsorption chamber in order for the porous sample to reach the target uptake value; (d) adjusting pressure within the adsorption chamber until the pressure within the adsorption chamber is within the target interval for a predetermined amount of time; and (e) repeating steps (a)-(d) until the porosimetry run is complete.

Process for characterization of micro and meso porous materials

Dielectric compositions that include compound of the formula [(M')(A&#x2032;)][(M&#x2033;),(B&#x2033;)(C&#x2033;)]O(V)and protonated dielectric compositions that include a protonated dielectric compound within the formula [(M&#x2032;)(A&#x2032;)](M&#x2033;)(B&#x2033;)(C&#x2033;)]O(V)(H)are disclosed. Composite materials that employ one or more of these dielectric compounds together with an electrolyte also are disclosed. Composite material that employs one or more of these dielectric compounds together with an electrochemally active material also are disclosed.

High energy density ionic dielectric materials and devices

Nanoporous and mesoporous carbon materials are fabricated in a pyrolysis process in which a starting mixture including a carbonizing polymer and a pyrolyzing polymer are employed. In one instance, the carbonizing polymer and pyrolyzing polymer are joined together in the form of a block copolymer. In another instance, the carbonizing polymer is a polyfurfuryl alcohol and the pyrolyzing polymer is polyethylene glycol diacid. These two polymer materials are mixed together and not copolymerized. The pore structure of the material may be controlled by controlling the molecular weight of various of the polymer components.

Method for the synthesis of porous carbon materials

A self healing high energy glass capacitor is provided. The capacitor can have a glass layer with a top surface and a bottom surface. A top sacrificial layer can extend across the top surface and a bottom sacrificial layer can extend across the bottom surface. In addition, a top electrode can extend across the top sacrificial layer and a bottom electrode can extend across the bottom sacrificial layer. In some instances the glass capacitor has an energy breakdown of at least 6 joules per cubic centimeter.

Self healing high energy glass capacitors

A gas permeable, carbon based, nanocomposite membrane comprises a nanoporous carbon matrix comprising a pyrolyzed polymer, and a plurality of nanoparticles of carbon or an inorganic compound disposed in the matrix. The matrix is prepared by pyrolyzing a polymer, and nanoparticles of the particulate material are disposed in the polymer prior to pyrolysis. The particles may be disposed in a precursor of the polymer, which precursor is subsequently polymerized, or in the polymer itself.
