What is disclosed is process for backing data objects from a content addressed storage system to a tape storage device such that the data objects are written in a contiguous sequential fashion. Data objects are kept together on the storage medium, rather than fragmented. An embodiment of the present invention describes the software modules and memory buffers required to implement this process. Additionally, what is disclosed is a process that restores data objects that have been contiguously written to tape. According to one embodiment of the present invention, recovery of non-fragmented data objects is made more efficient and less prone to failure.

Process for contiguously streaming data from a content addressed storage system

This invention involves approximating a gray scale tone with a more limited range image producer, a process known as screening. This invention reduces the time needed for such screening by discriminating when screening is not needed. In a first embodiment, the rendering process produces a minimally enclosing bounding box surrounding all rendered objects. In an alternative embodiment, scan lines including any part of a rendered object are noted. The screening makes better use of memory by dividing each row of a preference matrix into segments. The lookup tables associated with these segments are sequentially loaded into a memory cache. Input pixels mapping into the loaded segment lookup tables are screened. Then the lookup table associated with the next segment of the preference matrix are loaded into the memory cache and used to screen input pixels mapping into that segment. The method of packs two output pixels into a single data word while multi-level screening even when the preference matrix has an odd row length by alternating consideration of M&#x2212;1 input pixels and M+1 input pixels, where M is the row length.

Segmented multilevel screening for printing files in a page description language

In the present invention, an 8-bit input pixel gray level at a particular location in an image is screened, or compressed, down to k-bits where k is less than 8. A plurality of threshold tables are generated which represent a tone curve associated with the image in accordance with threshold table load logic (48). A preference matrix (42) which maps each pixel of the image to one of the threshold tables is generated using an image plane mapping interface (44) based on the input pixel location. An entry from the threshold table associated with the input pixel is selected using the gray level of the input pixel. The input pixel gray level is simultaneously compared with each of four thresholds in the selected entry using a quad comparator (58). A status register (60) is set based on the results for each comparison and is used to generate the k-bit output gray level associated with the input pixel.
