A method is provided for producing carbon dioxide by combusting a carbonaceous fuel with oxygen or with a gas mixture containing more than 25 mol % of oxygen obtaining a flue gas mixture, wherein the flue gas mixture is processed obtaining a secondary gas mixture containing carbon dioxide and oxygen, and wherein a part of the oxygen contained in the secondary gas mixture is catalytically reacted with a first auxiliary fuel in a reactor system comprising a series of multiple reactors, obtaining further carbon dioxide and water. A further part of the oxygen contained in the secondary gas mixture is catalytically reacted with a second auxiliary fuel in the reactor system. A corresponding apparatus is also described herein.

Method and apparatus for producing carbon dioxide

A method is provided in which a carbon dioxide containing flue gas is provided by combusting a carbonaceous fuel in a high pressure steam generating unit using combustion air, and in which the carbon dioxide in the flue gas is at least partially captured and compressed in a carbon dioxide capture and compression unit having a carbon dioxide scrubber operated with an absorbing liquid which is regenerated using low pressure steam. The combustion air used in the high pressure steam generating unit is at least partially heated using sensible heat of the flue gas and/or the steam used for regenerating the absorption liquid of the carbon dioxide scrubber is at least partially generated using sensible heat of the flue gas. A corresponding system is also described herein.

Post-combustion carbon dioxide capture and compression

A method for producing synthesis gas and ammonia by forming a synthesis gas mixture; separating solids from the synthesis gas mixture; subjecting the synthesis gas mixture to a shift reaction and separating the reaction products by a pressure swing adsorption unit. The hydrogen and nitrogen separated in the pressure swing adsorption unit are fed to an ammonia reactor to produce ammonia.

Methods for producing synthesis gas for ammonia production

A method and system for integrating a power plant and a post combustion carbon capture plant such as a solvent based absorption-regeneration process plant. Electricity is produced by a boiler feeding steam to one or more turbines. The flue gas from the boiler is fed to a waste heat recovery unit which captures heat and provides it to the post combustion capture plant where it can be used in a stripper interstage heater as a supplemental heat for solvent regeneration. Additionally recovered heat can be also integrated with the power generation plant by transferring it to the boiler feed water heating system. Part of the electricity that is generated is also fed to the post combustion capture plant where it will be used to power unit operations therein.

Waste heat utilization for energy efficient carbon capture

A method for the transport of carbon dioxide from a feed means to a removal means in a pressure pipe, which method includes the production of a transport mixture containing up to 80 mol % carbon dioxide and an inert gas, in particular nitrogen, in the feed means, the pressurised feeding of the transport mixture into the pressure pipe, and the pressurised transport of the transport mixture in the pressure pipe to the removal means.

A structured packing element comprises a plurality of corrugated sheets and one planar member positioned adjacent to each of the corrugated sheets. The planar member has a top edge and a bottom edge that are at least proximally aligned with the top and bottom edges respectively of the corrugated sheets. The planar member is further characterized by a middle portion having an open area percent that is higher than the open area percents of the top and bottom portions of the planar member. The structured packing element can be used to form structured packings for distillation applications.

Structured packing

A structured packing with improved packing elements and method of using the structured packing. Each structured packing element comprises corrugated sheets and planar members alternating with and located between the corrugated sheets The planar members are positioned so that at least the lowermost horizontal edges of the planar members and the corrugated sheets are situated proximal to one another. Perforations provided in the planar members and the corrugated sheets are designed to avoid turbulent flows and bulk fluid flow across the packing element while allowing transverse pressure equalization. Different configurations of corrugated sheets may be used with the planar members to form the structured packing.

Air separation units are designed and constructed by selecting two or more modules from libraries containing different module designs. Each library comprises at least two modules with standardized interface point layouts. The standardization of interface points for each module in a given library allows for module interchangeabilty and flexibility in the design and construction of air separation units.

Air separation units

The present invention provides a structured packing comprising a plurality of corrugated sheets and a plurality of flat, planar members alternating with and located between the sheets to inhibit turbulence in vapor ascending through the structured packing. The plurality of planar members are positioned so that at least the lowermost horizontal edge of the planar members and the corrugated sheets are situated proximal to one another as viewed when said structured packing is in use. When the planar members have substantially the same length and width as the corrugated sheets, the planar members and the corrugated sheets have perforations sized to inhibit transverse liquid and vapor flow while but allowing transverse pressure equalization through the structured packing. The size and number of perforations can be optimized for air separation applications.

The present invention provides a structured packing comprising a plurality of corrugated sheets and a plurality of flat, planar members alternating with and located between the sheets to inhibit turbulence in vapor ascending through the structured packing. The plurality of planar members are positioned so that at least lowermost transverse edges of the planar members and the corrugated sheets are situated at least proximal to one another as viewed when said structured packing is in use. Each of the planar members and the corrugated sheets has perforations sized to inhibit liquid and vapor flows but to allow pressure equalization. The planar members can be strip-like and positions at or near the top and bottom transverse edges of the corrugated sheets or can have the same length and width of the corrugated sheets. The size and number of perforations can be optimized for air separation applications.

A distillation method and column in which a gaseous mixture is introduced into a bottom region of a packed column having a plurality packed beds using structured packing. The gaseous mixture comprises higher and lower volatility components. The packed column is operated so that the higher and lower volatility components have a relative volatility within the column in a range of between 1.05 and 1.8. In order to alleviate the effect of liquid maldistribution in the lowermost bed of such a column, the lowermost bed is sized to be between about 50% and about 80% of the height of the next overlying bed, with 80% being preferred and the total height of the packing within the column is at least about six meters.

Distillation method and column

A liquid distributor in the form of a tray or trough network is provided with a plurality of rows of apertures through which liquid descends. A predistributor trough predistributes liquid onto the rows of apertures and is provided with bottom and side openings from which the liquid is distributed onto the plate. The side openings are located proximally with respect to the bottom openings to enhance uniformity of velocity profile of the liquid.

Liquid distributor

A liquid distributor tray for a distillation column for distributing a descending liquid phase to be contacted with an ascending vapor phase within the distillation column. A tray is provided for collecting the descending liquid phase and has rows of apertures for downward passage of the descending liquid phase. Rows of vapor risers are located between the rows of apertures for a passage of the ascending vapor phase, and an upward direction through the tray. Rows of elongated liquid collectors are located above the rows of vapor risers and between the rows of apertures for collecting all or part of the descending liquid phase before the descending liquid phase reaches the tray. Rows of elongated liquid collectors provided with slots or openings are provided for collecting and then redistributing the descending liquid phase caught in the liquid collectors over a central region of the tray. Such redistribution prevents replication of maldistribution throughout the column. Vapor risers can be connected to a distributor trough and be given a rectangular cross-section to provide a sufficient structural rigidity to the tray that such tray can be fabricated with the use of sheet metal and riveted construction.

Filling a gas vessel by initially flowing gas into the vessel at a rate low enough to avoid sudden heating of the gas, then increasing the fill rate until the maximum fill rate is attained, then reducing the flow rate as the vessel approaches the filled condition.

Method of filling gas containers

Hot exhaust gases from oxygen-based fossil fuel fired-furnaces made up predominantly of steam and carbon dioxide are used for reforming a hydrocarbonaceous substance in the presence or absence of oxygen to produce carbon monoxide and hydrogen. Additional hydrogen can be produced by subjecting the carbon monoxide produced in the reaction to the water gas shift reaction.
