Systems, apparatuses, and methods are provided for scalable manufacturing of thermoelectric device modules for multiple uses on a single substrate. An example method can include disposing thermoelectric structures on a substrate, the substrate having a first substrate material, and the thermoelectric structures having a thermoelectric material disposed on a second substrate material. The example method can further include removing the second substrate material from each of the thermoelectric structures. The example method can further include forming electrical contacts on a top surface of each respective one of the thermoelectric structures. The example method can further include forming top headers over subsets of the electrical contacts. The example method can further include forming thermoelectric device modules, each of the thermoelectric device modules having at least a pair of the thermoelectric structures and at least one of the top headers.

Large area scalable fabrication methodologies for versatile thermoelectric device modules

A thermotactile stimulation prosthesis includes a prosthesis extremity having a prosthesis interface configured for attachment to a human limb, and a thermoelectric actuator array coupled to the prosthesis interface and configured to establish a noninvasive thermoneural human-machine interface capable of providing sensations of temperature to the human limb.

Example superlattice structures and methods for thermoelectric devices are provided. An example structure may include a plurality of superlattice periods. Each superlattice period may include a first material layer disposed adjacent to a second material layer. For each superlattice period, the first material layer may be formed of a first material and the second material layer may be formed of a second material. The plurality of superlattice periods may include a first superlattice period and a second superlattice period. A thickness of a first material layer of the first superlattice period may be different than a thickness of a first material layer of the second superlattice period.

Superlattice structures for thermoelectric devices

A microfluidic apparatus is provided that includes a thermoelectrically-activated pixel array, a microfluidic chip, and control circuitry. The pixel array may include a plurality of thermal pixels, with each thermal pixel including a thermoelectric device. The microfluidic chip may include a microfluidic channel disposed adjacent to the thermal pixels such that thermal energy generated by the thermal pixels is received by the microfluidic channel to form a localized spot within the microfluidic channel corresponding to each thermal pixel. The control circuitry may be electrically coupled to each of the thermal pixels and configured to control the thermal energy being generated by each thermal pixel to control a temperature at each localized spot within the microfluidic channel.

A fast-rate thermoelectric device control system includes a fast-rate thermoelectric device, a sensor, and a controller. The fast-rate thermoelectric device includes a thermoelectric actuator array disposed on a wafer, and the thermoelectric actuator array includes a thin-film thermoelectric (TFTE) actuator that generates a heating and/or a cooling effect in response to an electrical current. The sensor is configured to measure a temperature associated with the heating or cooling effect and output a feedback signal indicative of the measured temperature. The controller is in communication with the fast-rate thermoelectric device and the sensor, and is configured to control the electrical current based on the feedback signal.

Fast-rate thermoelectric device

An apparatus includes an anode of a cell for a battery, a cathode of the cell, an anode thermoelectric device, and a cathode thermoelectric device. The anode thermoelectric device may be operably coupled to the anode of the cell, and the anode thermoelectric device may be connected in electrical series with the anode of the cell. The cathode thermoelectric device may be operably coupled to the cathode of the cell, and the cathode thermoelectric device being connected in electrical series with the cathode of the cell. The cathode thermoelectric device and the anode thermoelectric device may operate as a heat pump system configured to remove heat from the cathode and provide heat to the anode in response to the cell being discharged, and remove heat from the anode and provide heat to the cathode in response to the cell being charged.

Active thermal management of battery cells via thermoelectrics

An electric generator device is provided that includes a thermoelectric array, a base plate, and an electric power output. The thermoelectric array may include a hot side portion and a cold side portion. The base plate may be configured to receive heat from a heat source to be transferred to the hot side portion of the thermoelectric array. The electric power output may be electrically coupled to the thermoelectric array. The thermoelectric array may be configured to convert a temperature differential into an electric voltage for output to the electric power output. The power generation housing may be configured to hold a heat rejection substance that absorbs heat from the cold side portion of the thermoelectric array to facilitate generation of the temperature differential between the hot side portion and the cold side portion of the thermoelectric array.

Thermoelectric generator

A water filtration system with power generating capability includes a membrane that receives relatively hot water on a dirty side, purifies the hot water, and transmits it to a clean side having relatively cold purified water. The system further includes at least one thermoelectric element coupled to the membrane that absorbs thermal energy from the dirty side and emits thermal energy into the clean side to generate electrical power. The system further includes at least one conductor electrically coupled to the at least one thermoelectric element that channels generated electrical power away from the at least one thermoelectric element.

A thermoelectric material and a thermoelectric converter using this material. The thermoelectric material has a first component including a semiconductor material and a second component including a rare earth material included in the first component to thereby increase a figure of merit of a composite of the semiconductor material and the rare earth material relative to a figure of merit of the semiconductor material. The thermoelectric converter has a p-type thermoelectric material and a n-type thermoelectric material. At least one of the p-type thermoelectric material and the n-type thermoelectric material includes a rare earth material in at least one of the p-type thermoelectric material or the n-type thermoelectric material.

Rare earth-doped materials with enhanced thermoelectric figure of merit

A method of forming a thermoelectric device may include forming a first electrically conductive trace, and bonding a thermoelectric element to the first electrically conductive trace. After bonding the thermoelectric element to the first electrically conductive trace, a metal post may be formed on the thermoelectric element so that the thermoelectric element is between the first electrically conductive trace and the metal post. After forming the metal post, the metal post may be bonded to a second electrically conductive trace so that the metal post is between the second electrically conductive trace and the thermoelectric element. Other related methods and structures are also discussed.

Methods of forming thermoelectric devices including conductive posts and/or different solder materials and related methods and structures

A structure, system and method for controlling a temperature of a heat generating device in a solid medium, wherein heat is extracted from the medium into at least one heat extraction device, the heat extraction device dissipates heat into an environment apart from the medium by a heat sink thermally coupled to the heat extraction device; and heat from the medium is dissipated into the heat sink by a first thermal interface material thermally coupling the heat sink to the medium.

Thin film thermoelectric devices for hot-spot thermal management in microprocessors and other electronics

A thermoelectric device having at least one unipolar couple element () including two legs () of a same electrical conductivity type. A first-temperature stage () is connected to one of the two legs. A second-temperature stage () is connected across the legs of the at least one unipolar couple element. A third-temperature stage () is connected to the other of the two legs. Methods for cooling an object and for thermoelectric power conversion utilize the at least one unipolar couple element to respectively cool an object and produce electrical power.

Thethermoelectricthermoelectricdevice includes at least one deposited film of a thermoelectric material having opposed first and second major surfaces separated by a thickness of the at least one deposited film with the at least one deposited film being patterned to define a plurality of thermoelements arranged in a matrix pattern having rows of alternating conductivity type, a first header having formed thereon a first interconnecting member with the first header mounted on the first major surface of the deposited film such that the first interconnecting member is connected to one side of the plurality of thermoelements and connects adjacent thermoelements of an opposite conductivity type, and a second header having formed thereon a second interconnecting member with the second heads mounted on the second major surface of the deposited film such that the second interconnecting member is connected to an opposite side of said plurality of thermoelements and connects adjacent thermoelements of an opposite conductivity type.
