System and method for backoff correction of channel quality information (CQI). A correction factor is calculated based on a goodness measure such as packet error rate (PER). The selection of modulation and coding scheme (MCS) is made considering the channel quality information (CQI) adjusted by the correction factor. A meaningful goodness measure can be imposed if the goodness measure is very low. A different correction factor can be calculated for different confidence levels, MCSs and transmission modes.

Line sensor selection for quantifying alien crosstalk in a shared communications medium

Described are techniques for performing lossy encoding. Source data and quality data are received by an encoder. The encoder maps the source data into a compressed representation having a level of distortion in accordance with the quality information. The compressed representation may be decoded without using the quality information.

In a modem pool system capable of mitigating alien crosstalk, a system including a first modem pool including at least two modems, at least one protected line connected to one of the modems, at least one sensor line connected to another of the modems, at least one alien crosstalk predictor operative to sample an alien signal on the at least one sensor line and provide an alien crosstalk prediction signal, and at least one alien crosstalk prediction summation element operative to receive the alien crosstalk prediction signal from the alien crosstalk predictor and subtract the alien crosstalk prediction signal from a data transmission signal on the protected line.

Crosstalk mitigation in a modem pool environment

A system for detecting and correcting impulse noise present on an input data signal includes an impulse detector module receiving an input data signal and producing as output an correction enable signal indicating when an impulse correction is required. An impulse corrector module receives the input data signal and a correction enable signal and produces a corrected data signal, e.g., having the impulse canceled or blanked, as output. A reliability estimator and selector module receives the corrected data signal and the input data signal and selects as output the input signal which is more reliable. In one embodiment, the impulse detector includes first and second complementary impulse detectors, the outputs of which are analyzed by an enable and correction module to produce an impulse detection signal with improved accuracy. Preferably, the enable and correction module also indicates the most appropriate type of impulse correction in accordance with the detection signals from the complementary detectors. A novel system and method of detecting impulses based on Gram Schmidt techniques is also presented. In this method, one or more channels of a multi-channel data signal are kept free of data. When a whitening filter is applied, impulses on these quiet channels are emphasized. The Gram Schmidt technique exploits this fact to provide for improved impulse detection. The system can be modified to detect other types of low dimensionality noise.
