A method for fabricating a composite useful in a white light emitting device, includes mixing a phosphor and a filler to form a mixture; sintering the mixture (e.g., using spark plasma sintering) to form a composite; and annealing the composite to reduce oxygen vacancies and improve optical properties of the composite. Also disclosed is a white light emitting device including a laser diode or light emitting diode optically pumping the phosphor in the composite to produce white light. The composite fabricated using the method (and having. e.g., at most 50% phosphor by weight) can (1) reduce an operating temperature of the phosphor by 55 degrees, (2) increase an external quantum efficiency (e.g., by at least 15%) of the white light emitting device, and (3) result in color points and quality of the white light that is equal to or improved, as compared to without the filler.

Ce:YAG/A1Ocomposites for laser-excited solid-state white lighting

A high-power, high-brightness lighting system for large venue lighting, which includes a laser diode as the excitation source and one or more phosphor materials placed at a remote distance from the laser source. A blue-green emitting Ce-activated oxyfluoride phosphor for use with a light emitting diode (LED) in solid state lighting applications. The blue-green emitting Ce-activated oxyfluoride phosphor is represented as:(SrAE)(AlT)OF:Cewherein 0&#x3c;x&#x2266;0.3, 0&#x2266;y&#x2266;1, AE includes at least one element selected from alkaline earth metals on the periodic table, for example, Mg, Ca and Ba, 0&#x2266;z&#x2266;1, and T includes at least one atom selected from Al, B, Ga, and In. The blue-green emitting Ce-activated oxyfluoride phosphor may be combined with another phosphor to generate the white light. Specifically, the present invention provides for white light generation by combining the blue-green emitting Ce-activated oxyfluoride phosphor with either a near-ultraviolet (UV) LED and red emitting phosphor, or with a near-UV LED and a red-yellow phosphor.

A Cebased aluminate phosphor or Cebased phosphor in a solid solution can be used for white light generation when combined with a blue or ultraviolet light emitting diode.
