An air bearing for a slider including cooperating raised bearing surfaces or portions along a trailing edge portion of the slider. The cooperating raised bearing surfaces or portions are formed on a stepped bearing surface which is elevated above a recessed bearing surface. The cooperating raised bearing surfaces or portions form raised rails or rails portions or a raised center pad or raised center pad portion on the stepped bearing surface to reduce cross curve sensitivity.

An air bearing slider including a recessed cavity surface to provide an adaptable bearing surface to compensate for thermal expansion or pole tip protrusion. The recessed cavity surface forms a leading edge cavity step to a raised bearing surface proximate to a trailing edge of the slider. The leading edge cavity step forms a rampless air bearing surface proximate to the trailing edge of the slider which is adaptable to form a ramp to pressurize a protruding surface of a transducer portion of the head.

One embodiment of the present invention pertains to a slider that includes an aerodynamic surface which includes a first bearing surface, a cavity floor, and a first recessed pressurization surface. The first bearing surface is disposed on the aerodynamic surface, defining a bearing height. The cavity floor is disposed on the aerodynamic surface at a cavity depth below the bearing height. The first recessed pressurization surface is adapted to provide above-ambient fluid pressure when the slider is in nominal flight, which is greater than fluid pressure provided elsewhere on a trailing half of the aerodynamic surface at a substantial displacement from a longitudinal centerline of the aerodynamic surface. The first recessed pressurization surface is disposed on the aerodynamic surface at a recessed depth which is between the bearing height and the cavity depth.

An aerodynamic slider has at least one side surface that is continuously curved between the leading and trailing surfaces to substantially eliminate off-track forces on the side surface due to changing skew orientations. A slider profile is modeled, and a numerical simulation of airflow on the modeled profile is generated for each of a plurality of skew orientations within a range of skew orientations at which the slider will fly. The modeled slider profile is repeatedly adjusted based on the numerical simulations until a vibration analysis on the modeled profile indicates vibration does not exceed a predetermined minimum.

An electrostatic actuator for adjusting a spacing. A first body has an electrically conducting surface, and a second body has a body surface separated by the spacing from the electrically conducting surface. A conductor layer and an actuator electrode are recessed in the second body, and an electrode face faces the electrically conducting surface across the spacing. The actuator electrode comprises a semi-insulating material with a combination of electrical resistivity and thickness which prevents shorting of the conductor layer to the electrical conducting surface through a dielectric breakdown in the spacing.

A method of detecting contact between a transducing head-carrying slider and a rotatable disc is performed by applying an electrostatic voltage between the slider and the disc and monitoring current flow across an interface between the slider and the disc. The monitored current flow across the interface between the slider and the disc is analyzed to detect contact between the slider and the disc.

A device for accessing data stored on a medium includes a substrate that has a transducer on a back side, a bottom side facing the disc, and a surface that protrudes from the bottom side. An insulation layer is placed on top of the surface. An electrostatic actuator electrode is placed on top of the insulation layer. The electrostatic actuator electrode faces the medium across an electrostatically charged portion of an air layer. The electrostatic actuator electrode protrudes above the surface into the electrostatically charged portion of the air layer.

A disc head slider is provided and includes a disc-facing surface. The disc-facing surface comprises an inside set of surface components that includes an inside cavity dam and an inside sub-ambient pressure cavity having an inside cavity floor. The disc-facing surface further comprises an outside set of surface components that includes an outside cavity dam and an outside sub-ambient pressure cavity having an outside cavity floor. The disc-facing surface also comprises a center set of surface components that is generally disposed between the inside and outside sets of surface components. The center set of surface components includes a center cavity dam and a center sub-ambient pressure cavity having a center cavity floor. The inside, outside and center sets of surface components are separate and disassociated from one another.

Herein is disclosed a method and apparatus for reducing particle collection on a slider or gimbal tongue. The gimbal tongue is shaped so as to interact with airflow within a disc drive to direct particles away from the slider and gimbal tongue. The leading edge of the gimbal tongue overhangs the leading edge of the slider. As air current approaches such a geometry, a large pocket of slow moving, high pressure air is created just upwind of the slider. Thus, as particulate matter encounters this pocket, the matter is slowed and its momentum is partially dissipated. A vent is provided in the gimbal tongue. The vent permits an escape route for the particles to move to an area of lower pressure, located on the other side of the gimbal tongue.

A disc drive has an actuator assembly that includes an actuator arm and a suspension having a load beam for supporting a head above a surface of a disc. The actuator assembly includes a plurality of surface features formed on a surface of at least one of the actuator arm and the load beam to reduce aerodynamic drag forces experienced by the actuator assembly. The disc drive may also include an air dam having a finger extending over the surface of the disc, where the finger includes a plurality of surface features to reduce flow separation of an airflow passing over the finger. The surface features may comprise dimples or V-shaped shark skin denticles.
