Communication frames transmitted over a communication network may have different QoS requirements for each communication session. The required BER for different types of communication session is selected based at least in part on the required QoS for that communication session. When frames are received, the QoS level associated with the frame is determined. Based at least in part on the QoS level, the frames are routed toward the destination over a path that provides BER protection commensurate with the required QoS. Prior to transmission to the destination, the processed frames are multiplexed together into a single stream of segment. On the receiving side, the stream of segments is divided in accordance with the QoS level associated with the segments and the segments are routed over a path that is selected, at least in part, on the QoS level. Over this selected path, the original frames are restored and then provided to the destination node.

Adapting bit error rate to a target quality of service

A bandwidth sensing system operates to sense the existence of additional bandwidth available for transmitting data over a best effort communication. The operations include receiving an original block of data from a transmitting node and calculating error correction data based on the original block of data. The original block of data and the error correction data is then transmitted toward a receiving node. The data may be simply appended or, the entire block may be modified during the error correction data process. When the original block of data and error correction data is received at the receiving end associated with the receiving node, the data is analyzed to determine if any errors occurred in the transmission. If so, the error correction data is used to maintain the integrity of the transmitted data by restoring the original block. However, if no errors are detected, because the error correction data inherently requires the transmission of additional data, the receiving end can conclude that additional bandwidth is available over the channel. Thus, the transmitting node can be notified of the available bandwidth so that additional bandwidth can be utilized on subsequent transmissions.

Method and system for sensing available bandwidth over a best effort connection

The allocation of network resources, such as bandwidth, etc., can be dynamically adjusted based on the knowledge of the traffic volume, the transport protocol used by the payload and entitled level of services. The type of transport protocol can be determined by monitoring and analyzing characteristics of the data traffic. The frames or packets over a particular channel are monitored to identify the time between frames for a particular period of time. This time then can be used to calculate a recent average time. The timing of subsequently received frames can then be compared to this average to determine if the transport protocol is UDP, TCP or some other protocol. In other embodiments a recent average throughput can be calculated and be compared to a current throughput. This information, along with the load and entitled level of service is used to control the network resources.

Method and system for identifying UDP communications

A system and method suitable for identifying the type of communication that is transferred between two intermediate nodes over a communication link that has a plurality of different channels or sub-channels each of which carry user's data. With accurate identification of the communication types, subsequent bandwidth management decisions can be made such that a telecommunications system can have increased bandwidth utilization without jeopardizing user contracted QoS levels.

Method and system for identifying media type transmitted over an atm network

Multi-channel network communication is improved by reducing the amount of data that is transmitted over connections that can stem from a similar source. Content of data packets transmitted from the source are reduced and the result is compared to previously transmitted data packets. If identical packets are found, then only an identification of the packet is transmitted. At the receiving side, the identification is used to identify a previously received data packet and use that as though it was the recently received packet. If a similar packet is identified, then the identification of the similar packet, along with change information is transmitted to the receiving side.

Method and system for saving bandwidth during broadcasting/multicasting

A method of transmitting data packets to a cellular mobile unit, comprising: establishing a data transfer path for providing data from a data network gateway to a base station controller, for a first mobile station identity; and transmitting data received along the established path to at least one mobile station having at least one second identity different from the first identity.

Multicast transmission in packet based cellular networks

A multicasting system for reception of multimedia information comprising: a content switch coupled to a multimedia content source and at least one multimedia smart terminal. The multimedia content source includes a plurality of multimedia contents, wherein each multimedia content is supported by a primary multimedia stream transmitted over a primary dedicated channel having a primary bandwidth. At least one multimedia smart terminal is configured to receive from the content switch over a network each multimedia content as a secondary multimedia stream transmitted over a secondary channel having a secondary bandwidth. The content switch includes a bandwidth scaler configured to scale each primary multimedia stream to a plurality of secondary multimedia sub-streams that are substantially synchronized. The multimedia smart terminal includes a smart terminal sub-stream switch configured to switch among the plurality of secondary multimedia sub-streams in order to select a substantially optimum secondary multimedia sub-stream. The substantially optimum secondary multimedia sub-stream includes a substantially optimum relationship between an error rate level determined at the time of reception of a multimedia content and the quality of reception of a multimedia content.

Multicasting transmission of multimedia information

An original previously compressed video stream image having a first level of compression including a first level of quantization is decompressed, and a set of original motion vectors for each P source picture and for each B source picture is recovered and saved. The decompressed video stream image is re-compressed re-using the most relevant saved original motion vectors in order to create a re-compressed video stream image having a second level of compression including a second level of quantization. The most relevant motion vectors point out to the camera movement and to the moving objects within the original reference frame.
