New gel conpositions which comprise a carbonaceous component attached to a gel component. Preferably, the corbonaceous component is selected from the group consisting of: carbon blacks, carbon fibers, activated carbons and graphitic carbons; and the gel component is selected from the group consisting of: metal oxide gels and polymeric gels. Also disclosed are new gel composition comprising: a gel component and a carbon black product having attached at least one organic group, the organic group comprising: a) at least one aromatic group, and b) at least one ionic group, at least one ionizable group, or a mixture of an ionic group and an ionizable group, wherein at least one aromatic group of the organic group is directly attached to the carbon black. Further disclosed are new gel compositon comprising: a gel component and a carbon black product having attached at least one organic group, the organic group comprising: a) at least one C.sub.1 -C.sub.12 alkyl group, and b) at least one ionic group, at least one ionizable group, or a mixture of an ionic group and an ionizable group, wherein at least one alkyl group of the organic group is directly attached to the carbon black. Uses for the gel compositions are also disclosed.

New gel compositions which comprise a carbonaceous component attached to a gel component. Preferably, the carbonaceous component is selected from the group consisting of: carbon blacks, carbon fibers, activated carbons and graphitic carbons; and the gel component is selected from the group consisting of: metal oxide gels and polymeric gels. .quadrature. Also disclosed are new gel compositions comprising: a gel component and a carbon black product having attached at least one organic group, the organic group comprising: a) at least one aromatic group, and b) at least one ionic group, at least one ionizable group, or a mixture of an ionic group and an ionizable group, wherein at least one aromatic group of the organic group is directly attached to the carbon black. Further disclosed are new gel compositions comprising: a gel component and a carbon black product having attached at least one organic group, the organic group comprising: a) at least one C.sub.1 -C.sub.12 alkyl group, and b) at least one ionic group, at least one ionizable group, or a mixture of an ionic group and an ionizable group, wherein at least one alkyl group of the organic group is directly attached to the carbon black. Uses for the gel compositions are also disclosed.

Gel compositions comprising silica and functionalized carbon products

Binder compositions are provided which include a mineral binder and a silicon-containing carbon black. The silicon-containing carbon black can have attached an ionic or ionizable organic group or can be oxidized. Silicon-containing carbon blacks may be prepared by a furnace method. The binder compositions of the present invention have improved coloring and weathering properties in comparison to binder compositions prepared with conventional carbon blacks. Furthermore, the binder compositions that incorporate silicon-containing carbon blacks having ionic or ionizable organic groups attached exhibit excellent dispersibility, even in pelletized form. Articles such as roofing tiles can be prepared from the binder compositions. Also contemplated is a method of improving the color stability of a mineral binder composition. Silicon-containing carbon blacks as described above are added to the mineral binder composition.

A mineral binder composition having incorporated therein a carbon black product comprising a carbon black having attached an organic group containing an ionic or an ionizable group.
