Various bone screws configured to be implanted into bone and methods of use are provided. In an exemplary embodiment, a bone screw is provided with an elongate shank and a head with a drive feature configured to couple with a driver tool for being advanced into bone and a threaded shank. The screw can have a distal end or tip that has one or more cutting edges thereon configured to cut bone as the bone screw is inserted into bone.

In general, surgical instruments described herein can include a handle assembly having an elongate shaft extending distally therefrom. The handle assembly can be configured to axially translate a carrier assembly that secures a stylet extending therethrough. Translation of the stylet can be made relative to a distal end of the elongate shaft. The surgical instruments can include various carrier assemblies for positioning the distal end of the stylet relative to the distal end of the elongate shaft based on a length of bone anchor to be installed by the surgical instrument.

Spinal screw insertion devices and methods

Methods of applying a locking cap to a bone anchor assembly. The bone anchor assembly includes a bone anchor and an elongate rod. The bone anchor includes a body that defines a channel and has a tissue retractor coupled thereto that defines a partial pathway to the channel.

Minimally invasive instrument set, devices, and related methods

Patient-mounted retractors with varying configurations and/or features are provided, along with additional components for use therewith in provided patient-mounted retractor assemblies. Blade type and tube type patient-mounted retractors that may be re-positioned during the course of a procedure are provided in varying configurations and/or geometries suitable for vayring procedures and/or patient anatomies. Applications of re-positionable patient-mounted retractor assemblies are particularly suitable for use in minimally invasive procedures, eliminating the need for table-mounted retraction assemblies and/or cannulas that restrict the operating envrionment.

Reamer instruments and related methods are disclosed herein, e.g., for reaming bone to facilitate in situ assembly of a bone anchor. In some embodiments, the instrument can include a feedback mechanism configured to alert the user when sufficient bone has been removed to facilitate assembly of the bone anchor. The feedback mechanism can be triggered by a movable shaft of the instrument that is displaced by the shank portion of the bone anchor as the surrounding bone is reamed.

A method of providing access to an intervertebral disc has been developed that involves using the patient's bony pedicle as an anchoring spot for a pedicle screw that temporarily attaches to the access port. Because this new procedure eliminates the need for the surgical table as an anchor, it also eliminates the assembly components extending from the table to the port at the access site, thereby unencumbering the surgeon's view and workspace while providing minimally invasive access.

Method and instruments for interbody fusion and posterior fixation through a single incision

Surgical instruments and methods for delivering bone anchor assemblies into bone are disclosed herein. Use of these anchors or instruments can eliminate one or more of the steps in a conventional bone anchor installation procedure, improving surgical efficiency and safety. One key element of the method is an assembly comprising: a) a screw extension comprising a shaft having a distal end portion comprising a receiver adapted for receiving a screw and a proximal end portion comprising a pivoting feature, b) a port comprising: i) a tubular wall defining a central passageway, ii) a longitudinal slot in the wall defining opposed ends of the wall, iii) opposed flanges extending radially from each end of the wall, and iv) a mating feature disposed in each opposed flanges adapted to pivotally mate with the pivoting feature of the screw extension, wherein the mating feature of the tube pivotally mates with the pivoting feature of the screw extension.
