The lighted surgical access system is provided that includes a circumferential retractor and a plastic optical fiber (POF) attached thereto. The circumferential retractor retracts and protects a patient's body opening while the POF illuminates the internal surgical site, body cavity and/or body opening.

Pressure conditioning systems for supplying insufflation gas to an open-ended body conduit such as a rectal cavity during a transanal minimally invasive surgery (TAMIS) procedure can reduce billowing of walls of the body conduit. A pressure conditioning system can include a pressure storage component, an accumulator, and a flow restrictor. The pressure storage component can include a variable volume reservoir that is biased to a relatively low volume state. The flow restrictor can include insufflation tubing with a restrictor plate having a relatively low diameter orifice. The pressure storage component, accumulator, and flow restrictor can be fluidly connected in various orders in series or as side branches from a gas flow conduit. Despite a pulsed or otherwise discontinuous insufflation gas flow and leakage and absorption from the body conduit, the pressure conditioning system can maintain a constant pressure within the body conduit.

Decontamination is achieved by producing an activated cleaning fluid mist using a decontamination apparatus having a source of a cleaning fluid, a mist generator having an input flow of the cleaning fluid and an output flow of a mist of the cleaning fluid at substantially one atmosphere ambient pressure, and an activator positioned to activate the mist of the cleaning fluid to produce the activated cleaning fluid mist wherein atoms of the cleaning fluid are activated. The activated cleaning fluid mist is contacted to a location to be decontaminated.

A biochemical agent is denatured by producing an activated cleaning fluid mist containing activated hydroxyl species wherein at least a portion of the activated cleaning fluid mist is in an activated state at substantially one atmospheric ambient pressure, and contacting the activated cleaning fluid mist to a biochemical agent.

An apparatus has a hand-cleaning volume sized to receive a gloved or ungloved human hand. The apparatus includes a mechanical-cleaning device and a chemical-cleaning device, operated sequentially to remove particles and chemical contaminants such as organics. The mechanical-cleaning device has a pressurized gas source positioned to direct a flow of pressurized activated gas into the hand-cleaning volume, and a gas-source vent communicating with the hand-cleaning volume to remove the pressurized activated gas after it has passed over the hand. The chemical-cleaning device has an activating nebulizer operable to emit an activated cleaning mist into the hand-cleaning volume so that the activated cleaning mist contacts the hand in the hand-cleaning volume. The hand is cleaned by directing a flow of pressurized ionized gas over the hand, and thereafter flowing a mist of activated cleaning solution over the hand. The cleaning solution preferably includes hydrogen peroxide.

Apparatus and method for cleaning particulate matter and chemical contaminants from a hand

An apparatus for processing an elastomeric article such as a glove includes an enclosure having a gas-filled interior, a support that receives the elastomeric article thereon and supports the elastomeric article within the enclosure, and a source of a gaseous cleaning agent which introduces a gaseous flow of the gaseous cleaning agent into the interior of the enclosure to contact the elastomeric article. The cleaning agent dislodges particulate contaminant from the elastomeric article and entrains the particulate contaminant in the gaseous flow as it passes by the elastomeric article. The source of the gaseous cleaning agent comprises a nebulizer source of a vaporized cleaning material, and a weakly ionized plasma source disposed within the interior of the enclosure and proximate to the article support location to create a weakly ionized plasma in the ambient atmosphere adjacent to the article support location. An exhaust port is positioned to receive the gaseous flow after it has passed by the elastomeric article, and a particle counter monitors the particles in the gaseous flow after it has passed by the elastomeric article. A microorganism sterilizer may be disposed within the interior of the enclosure and proximate to the article support location, to sterilize the elastomeric article.
