The invention relates to a method and devices for a packet switching system for traffic-load dependent power reduction in packet switching systems. In order to reduce the power consumption of a packet switching system, the method comprises the steps of determining a traffic rate for incoming data packets at the upstream packet processing device; processing the incoming data packets; transmitting an indication of the determined traffic rate from the upstream packet processing device to the downstream packet processing device at a time prior to the time that the processed data packets for which the traffic rate has been determined are transmitted to the downstream packet processing device; and adjusting available packet processing resources at the downstream packet processing device based on the received traffic rate indication.

Traffic-load dependent power reduction in high-speed packet switching systems

The invention concerns a method of performing an intra-segment handover (HO) of a mobile station (MS) from a source access point (AP) of a tree-structured segment (S) of an Ethernet-compliant telecommunication network to a target access point (AP) of said segment (S), as well as a switch (SW-) to support the execution of this method. After establishing contact between the mobile station (MS) and the target access point (AP), the mobile station (MS) sends an update entry request addressed to the segment gateway switch (GW). The update entry request is received by a switch (SW-) positioned in the tree structure of the segment (S) hierarchically above the source and target access points (AP, AP) and below the segment gateway switch (GW). The switch (SW-) checks whether its forwarding database contains a first entry comprising an address of the mobile station (MS) received by means of the update entry request. If the forwarding database of the switch (SW-) contains the first entry, the switch (SW-) squelches said update entry request and assumes the function of an anchor switch regarding the handover (HO), whereby the anchor switch is a switch of the segment (S) which is positioned in the tree structure of the segment (S) hierarchically above the source and target access points (AP, AP) and below the segment gateway switch (GW) and which is common to the ongoing session before and after the handover (HO).

Method of performing an intra-segment handover

The invention includes a method and apparatus for synchronizing line card forwarding databases. A method includes receiving a data packet at a line card, generating a control packet for each of at least one other line card to enable an address update operation thereat, and propagating the at least one control packet toward the at least one other line card. The control packet, or packets, is generated in response to a determination to perform an address update operation for the received data packet. The address update process may be implemented as an ingress address update process or an egress address update process. This address update process performed in conjunction with an address aging process.

The delay setting of an optical delay line interferometer (DLI) used to decode differentially encoded phase shift keyed signals (DPSK or DQPSK) is controlled using a control signal representative of the ratio P/Pof the rate of occurrence of double errors and the rate of occurrence of errors. A method of signal equalization of a transmitted bit stream by means of a feed forward equalizer is provided, whereby the signal is decomposed into at least two components and the components are multiplied with equalization parameters to form equalized components, which are superposed to form an equalized signal, and whereby conditional bit error rates by counting faulty transmitted bits in dependence of preceding and succeeding bits are determined and the equalization parameters are tuned dependent on the determined conditional bit error rates.
