A melt-mixed composition of non-melt flowable polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) and melt-fabricable perfluoropolymer is provided that exhibits thixotropy at increasing shear rate in the molten state and high elongation at break even at PTFE concentrations well above 4 wt %, based on the combined weight of the PTFE and the perfluoropolymer, e.g. at least 200% up to at least 30 wt % PTFE, the composition also exhibiting the structure of a dispersion of submicrometer-size particles of the PTFE in a continuous phase of the melt-fabricable perfluoropolymer.

Fluoropolymer composition

A process is provided for extruding a partially crystalline melt-fabricable perfluoropolymers. The process comprises blow molding from a perfluoropolymer having polytetrafluoroethylene sub-micrometer particles dispersed therein. The perfluoropolymer composition is a core/shell polymer, with pelletized blend, a dispersion blend or a melt-mixed polymer.

Tensile strength after heat aging of articles molded from melt-fabricable perfluoropolymer is improved by incorporating polytetrafluoroethylene as dispersed submicrometer-size particles into the melt-fabricable perfluoropolymer.

Aqueous dispersions on non-melt flowable PTFE and melt-fabricable perfluoropolymer are mixed together, followed by recovery of the resultant mixture of the dispersed particles of each of these polymers, and melt mixing of the resultant mixture of particles to obtain a blend in which the PTFE particles form the disperse phase and the perfluoropolymer forms the continuous phase, the melt mixing producing advantageous melt viscosities and the blend exhibiting advantageous physical properties even at high PTFE contents of about 30 wt %.

Fluoropolymer blending process

Core/shell polymer is provided wherein the core comprises non-melt flowable PTFE and the shell comprises melt-fabricable perfluoropolymer, the core/shell polymer providing a thixotropic melt blend and improved physical properties as compared to the melt-fabricable perfluoropolymer by itself.

Melt-fabricable core/shell perfluoropolymer

Melt-fabricable, tough copolymer of tetrafluoroethylene and fluorinated vinyl ether is produced in a suspension polymerization process by copolymerizing tetrafluoroethylene and fluorinated vinyl ether in a pressurized, agitated reaction vessel which contains aqueous medium, free radical initiator, and a telogen, the aqueous medium being essentially free of fluorine containing organic solvent. The contents of the reaction vessel are agitated during polymerization sufficiently to coagulate copolymer of tetrafluoroethylene and fluorinated vinyl ether. The melt-fabricable, tough copolymer having a melt viscosity of less than about 1&#xd7;10Pa&#xb7;S is isolated directly from the reaction vessel.

Melt-fabricable tetrafluoroethylene/fluorinated vinyl ether copolymer prepared by suspension polymerization

Modified polytetrafluoroethylene powder of a sinterable copolymer of tetrafluoroethylene containing about 0.5 to about 10 weight % of fluorinated vinyl ether, the copolymer having a melt creep viscosity of greater than about 1&#xd7;10Pa&#xb7;S. In preferred embodiments, the sinterable copolymer has a melt creep viscosity of greater than about 1&#xd7;10Pa&#xb7;S and fluorinated vinyl ether content of from about 1 to about 7 weight %. The polymer has a combination of a high level of fluorinated vinyl ether and a melt creep viscosity which is high enough to enable the fabrication of articles by sintering.

High vinyl ether modified sinterable polytetrafluoroethylene

Copolymers of tetrafluoroethylene and perfluoro(ethyl vinyl ether) having perfluoro(ethyl vinyl ether) content of at least 3 wt % exhibit excellent toughness even at melt viscosities of no greater than 25.times.10.sup.3 Pa.s. The copolymers can advantageously be made by aqueous dispersion copolymerization of the monomers in the absence of alkaline buffer and preferably in the absence of organic solvent.

Tetrafluoroethylene copolymer

Modified polytetrafluoroethylene fine powder made with initiator reduced towards the end of dispersion polymerization yields sintered paste extrudate having good surface smoothness.
