A lap splicing apparatus for lap splicing first and second webs together, with each of the first and second webs alternately constituting a running web and a new web to be spliced to the running web, includes a frame; a first spindle mounted at a first fixed position on the frame for holding a roll containing the first web at a first orientation; a second spindle mounted at a second fixed position on the frame for holding a roll containing the second web at the first orientation; a single lap splicing device immovably mounted at a fixed position on the frame for lap splicing the first and second webs together with the trailing tail end of the lap splice always being on the same side; a first transfer assembly of rollers for bringing the first web to the lap splicing device, and for turning the first web by at least one angle from the first orientation; and second transfer assembly of rollers for bringing the second web to the lap splicing device, and for turning the second web by at least one angle from the first orientation, such that the running web is at a first level and the new web is at a different, second level prior to the lap splicing operation, with the new web moving from the second level to the first level after the lap splicing operation.

A heat seal splice assembly for heat splicing first and second webs together, with each web alternately constituting a running web moving in first direction and a new web to be spliced to the running web upon depletion of the running web from a roll, includes a central guide having first and second sides, with the first web being located to the first side of the central guide and the second web being located to the second side of the central guide, the central guide having a hold down assembly for holding the new web to the central guide, a rotation assembly for rotating the central guide such that the new web held to one side of the central guide can be positioned to an opposite side of the central guide at which the running web is positioned, a clamping assembly for clamping the first and second webs together, a first heat seal assembly movable toward and away from the first side of the central guide to heat seal the first and second webs together against the first side of the central guide when the first and second webs are positioned at the first side of the central guide, and a second heat seal assembly movable toward and away from the second side of the central guide to heat seal the first and second webs together against the second side of the central guide when the first and second webs are positioned at the second side of the central guide.

A matrix rewinder includes a spider assembly having a spider drive shaft, a central hub thereon, a plurality of angularly spaced guide rods extending radially outward from the hub, a mounting block slidably mounted on each guide rod pair for radial movement, a mandrel rotatably mounted to each mounting block, and a drive motor for rotating the spider drive shaft; a mandrel drive shaft mounted coaxially with the spider drive shaft; a mandrel drive motor for rotating the mandrel drive shaft independently of the spider drive shaft to drivingly engage a first core removably mounted on the first mandrel at a first position to wind a web matrix on the first core; a cam track for guiding a second core removably mounted on a second mandrel into driving engagement with the mandrel drive shaft; a sensor sensing a diameter of the web matrix on the first core at the first position, and controlling the spider drive motor to move the second core into engagement with the web matrix when the web matrix wound on the first core at the first position has reached a predetermined diameter; and a knife assembly for cutting the web matrix extending between the first and second cores when the spider drive shaft moves the second core on the second mandrel into engagement with the web matrix such that the web matrix is then wound on the second core which has been then moved to the first position.

An apparatus for applying an adhesive coated tape on a core mounted on a mandrel, includes a mounting frame having mounted thereon an adhesive tape supply roller, a rewind roller, an idler roller mounted between the supply and rewind rollers such that the adhesive tape on the idler roller can be sandwiched between the idler roller and mandrel and transferred to the mandrel with the carrier layer being wound on the rewind roller, a motor for rotating the rewind roller, and a knife assembly pivotally mounted thereon adjacent the idler roller for cutting the adhesive layer extending between the supply roller and mandrel after the adhesive layer has been transferred to the mandrel; two link arms pivotally connecting the mounting frame about a pivot shaft secured to a main frame; a piston-cylinder assembly for pivotally moving the mounting frame about the link arms and relative to the mandrel such that the adhesive tape around the idler roller can be transferred to the mandrel; and a cam plate for pivotally moving the knife assembly to cause the adhesive layer which sticks to the knife to disengage from the knife assembly and fall onto the carrier layer.

A splice assembly for a paper web transport apparatus including first and second webs of paper with each web alternately constituting a running web moving in first direction and a new web to be spliced to the running web, the splice assembly including a knife guide for providing a cutting edge for cutting the running web and the new web; a moving assembly for moving the knife guide back and forth in a direction of movement of the running web; first and second clamping assemblies for selectively clamping the running and new web, the first and second clamping assemblies being positioned on opposite sides of the knife guide in the direction of movement of the running web; two knives for selectively cutting the running web and the new web against the knife guide; a first tape applicator for applying a piece of tape to the same side of a splice of the running web and the new web, regardless of which of the first and second webs is the running web and which of the first and second webs is the new web, without indexing rolls of the first and second webs; and a tape backing assembly for providing a backing pressure for the tape applicator such that the cut running web and the cut new web are sandwiched between the tape backing assembly and the tape applicator and the piece of tape is applied to the splice during the sandwiching operation.

Splice assembly for paper web transport apparatus

The web splicing apparatus for connecting a running web extending and traveling between a supply of web material and a web using machine to the end portion of a new supply of web material comprises a frame to which is secured and supported a splicing device. The splicing device has web clamps and cutting members and functions to connect the severed end portion of a running web to the end portion of a new web. Two sets of slide shoes are secured to the frame to engage a pair of rails so that the frame is reciprocatively supported for movement in the direction of travel of a running web, when the splicing device is operative to effect a splice, to thereby supply web to the web using machine and moves in a direction counter to the direction of travel of the running web after the splicing is completed.

Running web splicing apparatus

The roll winding machine for alternately forming a web roll on two driven arbors. It has a splicing device for receiving a continuously running web from a web accumulator. The splicing device has a splicing carriage for receiving and holding the distal end portion of a leader web and including cutting means for severing the running web so that a severed end portion is provided on the wound web roll and on the continuously running web. A web clamping means is provided to grip and prevent movement of the running web and to release both the severed end portion of the web of the wound roll and the running web. The splicing carriage is operative to cut the running web and affix the severed end portion of the running web to the distal end portion of the leader web so that the running web is wound on the other driven arbor upon movement of the clamping means to release the running web and leader web.

Semi-automatic roll winding machine

An expandable device for locking an annular member to a shaft for rotation therewith in which an annular body mounts on the shaft and carries a plurality of radially moveable bars overlying a single wall annular bladder lying against the surface of the body. The surface of the body is formed with annular raised ridges beneath each end of the bladder. A metal band formed with interlocking ends is secured around each end of the bladder to seal the ends of the bladder to the body.

Core locking device

A butt splicing unit for cutting a web running from a depleting roll and splicing the end of a supply web to the cut end of the running web. The unit includes a rectangular stationary knife and two moveable knife members below and on each side of the stationary knife. Each of the moveable knives cooperate with one of the knife edges formed by the lower corners of the stationary knife. Above the stationary knife, is a pair of vacuum plates for holding the end of a supply web. Each of the knife members includes a body having a vertical leading surface facing in the direction of the running web. Each of the leading surfaces are provided with vacuum ports for holding the lower portion of a strip of tape thereto. A knife blade is mounted at the top of each of the knife members and a recess is provided between one end of the blade and the body to receive the upper portion of the tape strip to hold it out of contact with the running tape. A horizontally slideable nip bar arrangement is positioned below the knife members.

Butt splicer

The splicer successfully lap splices web material being drawn from a roll under low tension. A central stationary knife member extends transversely of the web and splicing carriages on either side of the stationary knife are slideably mounted to be moved perpendicular to the web toward and away from the knife member. Each carriage includes a roller for directing the web past the splicing mechanism, a knife blade for cooperating with the knife member to cut the web, a clamping pad for engaging the side of the knife member for clamping web therebetween during a splice, and a pressure pad for impacting against the pad of the other carriage to press the webs to opposite sides of a strip of adhesive tape to form the splice.

Low tension lap slicer unit

An expandable device for locking an annular core to a shaft for rotation therewith in which an annular body mounts on the shaft and carries a plurality of radially movable bars overlying a single-wall annular bladder lying against the surface of the body. The bars are positioned side by side around the circumference of the body and are interconnected by linking members to limit radial movement. An annular notched band is secured to the body of each end of the bars and engages recesses therein to transmit torque between the bars and the body. Pressurized air is introduced between the bladder and the surface of the body to force the bars radially outward to grip the core.

Web from a depleting roll of web in use is directed along a vertical line by rollers. A knife member is mounted for movement across the line and has a knife edge on its lower surface to cut the web. Vacuum ports are provided on each side of the knife member to hold the end of a spare roll which is trimmed flush with the knife edge. A piece of tape is applied to and overlaps the end of the spare web. The spare web end is positioned on the side of the knife member facing away from the line. A pair of cutting plates are positioned on opposite sides of the line below the knife and are movable vertically. Tape pressing bars are pivoted to the plates. The plate on the opposite side of the line from the knife is positioned with its top edge aligned with the knife edge. The other plate is spaced from the knife edge so that the bar acts against the tape applied to the spare web end. The web is stopped during the splicing operation by a clamp carried by the lower plate and by a pair of nip rolls locked against rotation. The knife member is moved across the line to cut the tape in use and butt the end of the spare web thereto. The tape press forces the tape against the cut end of the web in use. The clamp is released and the nip rolls unlocked. A second piece of tape held to one of the nip rolls by vacuum is applied to the other side of the splice as the web moves past the rolls.
