Molybdenum disilicide matrix composites reinforced with refractory metal

A class of protected coatings for superalloys is described in which the coatings compositions are based on the compositions of the underlying substrate. By tailoring the coatings to the substrate composition, diffusional stability results and the other mechanical properties of the coating such as coefficient of thermal expansion and modulus, are similar to that of the substrate. The coating contains 7.5-11% Al, 9-16% Cr, 0.1-0.5% Hf, 2-8% Ta, 0.01-0.8% Y, balance Ni along with other elements all chosen to be similar in type and quantity to the substrate composition.

An improved high temperature fatigue resistant coating for nickel and cobalt base superalloys having good oxidation and sulfidation resistance. The coating comprises by weight, 8-30% Co, 8-30% Cr, 5-20% Al, 10-60% Ni and 0.05-1.0% of a reactive metal selected from the group of Y, Sc, La and mixtures thereof, balance selected from the group consisting of Pt, Rh, and mixtures thereof, the (Pt+Rh) content being at least 13%.

Coatings are described which are particularly suited for the protection of nickel and cobalt superalloy articles at elevated temperatures. The protective nature of the coatings is due to the formation of an alumina layer on the surface of the coating which serves to reduce oxidation/corrosion. The coatings contain aluminum, chromium, yttrium (or other oxygen active elements) and a metal chosen from the group consisting of nickel, cobalt and iron or mixtures thereof. The coatings further contain a controlled percentage of silicon which serves to greatly improve the protection afforded by the alumina film to the surface of the coating.

A cobalt base superalloy is disclosed which has good elevated temperature properties combined with low density and low cost. The alloy has a nominal composition of .9% carbon, 25% chromium, 15% nickel, 7.5% tungsten, 2.2% titanium, 1.2% zirconium, 1.0% iron, balance essentially cobalt, and is substantially free from columbium and tantalum.
