A process is provided for the preparation of certain 2-deoxyuridines including the steps forming a substituted alkyl 5-O-'protected'-2-deoxyribofuranoside, hydrocarbylating the latter compound, and condensing the hydrocarbylated compound in the presence of a Lewis or Bronsted acid with a silyluracil to form a uridine. Several tritylated ribofuranosides are novel compounds per se.

There is provided a method and compositions for improving the resistance to absorption of water by a porous rigid sintered and pressed block of short staple amorphous silica fiber by distributing within the pores of said block an alkylalkoxysilane or a fluoroalkylalkoxysilane which is substantially free of deleterious halide. Halide may be reduced by special purification techniques or by netralization in situ with acid scavanger.

Composition for waterproofing silica-ceramic insulation bodies

There is provided a novel product having the formula: ##STR1## where 'polymer' is an amine functional polymer, such as amine terminated polyethylene imine, amine terminated polyalkylene glycols, amine terminated anilineformaldehyde, amine terminated nylons, amine functional silicones; R.sup.1, R.sup.2, and R.sup.3 are C.sub.1 -C.sub.8 monovalent hydrocarbyl radicals, m is 1 to 3 and n is 1 to 10.

There is provided a corrosion inhibiting alkoxy silane characterized by an alkyleneamino group attached to silicon through a Si--C linkage, a carbonyl or thiocarbonyl group attached to an amine group and a terminal group which may be saturated or unsaturated aliphatic or cycloaliphatic group containing 6 to 20 carbon atoms, a saturated or unsaturated aminoaliphatic or amino cycloaliphatic group containing 6-20 carbon atoms; NHNH.sub.2 ; NH(CH.sub.2).sub.n N(R).sub.2 ; or a ##STR1## group where R.sup.2 is a saturated or unsaturated alkyl or haloalkyl group containing 3 to 20 carbon atoms. The invention also provides a method of inhibiting corrosion of metal surfaces by applying a coating containing or consisting of a novel silane as above described.

Silane compositions

There is provided a novel class of alkoxy silanes useful as corrosion inhibitors for metal surfaces and characterized by an alkylene group attached to silicon through a Si--C linkage. These compounds also contain nitrogen as an amine or an imine group in a linear or cyclic structure. Sulfur and/or a carbonyl or thiocarbonyl group may also be present. The invention also provides a method of inhibiting corrosion of metal surfaces by applying a coating containing or consisting of a novel silane as above described.

Polyhydroxyl silanes or siloxanes useful as vehicles for coatings applicable to metal, mineral or glass surfaces, are made by reacting a silane or siloxane having an amine terminated substituent attached to silicon with an aldonic acid lactone. Reaction occurs at temperatures below 80.degree. C. in alcohol solution under inert gas blanket. Products are water soluble and polymerizable at slightly elevated temperatures to hard, water insoluble tightly adhering films.

Polyhydroxyl silanes or siloxanes

A process for preparing 5-fluorouracil, and a novel starting compound for such process, are disclosed. The novel starting compound is 2,4,5-trifluoropyrimidine. The process comprises hydrolyzing the 2,4,5-trifluoropyrimidine at a temperature of about 2.degree. to about 100.degree. C., thereby directly producing the compound 5-fluorouracil. 5-Fluorouracil is a known anti-tumor agent, which has been used in the treatment of various types of cancers. In addition, 5-fluorouracil is a starting material for the production of certain types of pro-drugs, which are metabolized to form 5-fluorouracil in the body, such as, for instance, the compound 1-(2-tetrahydrofuryl)-5-fluorouracil.
