Methods, systems, apparatuses, and computer programs for offloading computing tasks to one or more computers, e.g., that implement an edge server. In one aspect, the method can include actions of transmitting, for a user equipment and to the one or more computers, uplink information via an air interface; determining whether the uplink information has been fully transmitted across the air interface; based on determining that the uplink information has been fully transmitted across the air interface, triggering a sleep mode for the user equipment and starting a first timer; determining that the first timer has expired; and based on determining that the first timer has expired, triggering (i) a user equipment wake-up operation and (ii) maintaining a second timer that indicates when the user equipment should enter the sleep mode if result data, to be generated using the uplink information, has not been received.

Discontinuous reception enhancements

A user equipment (UE) or other device performs service discovery of edge computing resources in a cellular network system and dynamic offloading of UE application tasks to discovered edge computing resources. As part of the discovery process, the device (e.g., the UE) may request edge server site capability information. When performing dynamic offloading, the UE may obtain (collect and/or receive) information regarding channel conditions, cellular network parameters or application requirements and dynamically determine whether a task of the application executing on the UE should be offloaded to an edge server or executed locally on the UE. In making decisions between offloaded or local execution, the UE may use a utility function that takes into account factors such as relative differences in application latency, energy consumption and offloading cost.

Dynamic service discovery and offloading framework for edge computing based cellular network systems

A circuit arrangement includes a preprocessing circuit configured to obtain context information related to a user location, a learning circuit configured to determine a predicted user movement based on context information related to a user location to obtain a predicted route and to determine predicted radio conditions along the predicted route, and a decision circuit configured to, based on the predicted radio conditions, identify one or more first areas expected to have a first type of radio conditions and one or more second areas expected to have a second type of radio conditions different from the first type of radio conditions and to control radio activity while traveling on the predicted route according to the one or more first areas and the one or more second areas.

In various aspects, power saving host-modem interactions are described herein. For instance, a host of a communication device includes a host processor that receives, via an interface, information about the reduced activity state of a modem of the communication device including an indication of the RRC state of the modem. It also receives, via the interface, information about a projected expiration of a reduced activity period of the modem including an indication of a time remaining until a next event of the modem. The host processor controls a reduction of an operation of a component of the communication device during the reduced activity period of the modem, based on the indication of the RRC state of the modem and the indication of the time remaining until the next event of the modem. The reduced activity state of the modem corresponding to the reduced activity period of the modem.

Power saving host-modem interaction in a communication device

A wireless communication device includes a processor configured to select an offload processing task for performance by an edge computing device; cause a baseband modem to establish a direct wireless connection between the wireless communication device and the edge computing device; cause the baseband modem to send first data to the edge computing device via the direct wireless connection; and receive second data from the edge computing device, wherein the second data comprise a result of the offload processing task performed on the first data. The edge computing device includes a processor configured to receive, from a user device, offloaded data to be processed according to an offload processing task; execute the offload processing task on the offloaded data; and cause the radio via the interface to wirelessly send a result of the executed offload processing task via a direct wireless connection with the user device.

Methods and devices for creating and operating a combined network and computational slice instance (NCSI) in a Multi-access Edge Computing (MEC) scenario. Communication and computational resources may be reserved by a NCSI controller for the NCSI. The communication resources may include network slices and the computational resources may include MEC computational resources of one or more MEC servers. The reserved resources may be selected based on quality of service (QoS) requirements of UEs that will utilize the NCSI. During operation, reserved resources for the NCSI may be dynamically renegotiated based on an aggregate load of the NCSI, the QoS of data traffic, and/or updated QoS requirements of the UEs.

Combined network and computation slicing for latency critical edge computing applications

Communication devices and methods of data communication are herein disclosed. In some aspects, a communication device may include a host and a modem interconnected by an interface. The host includes a host processor configured to control components of the communication device and to communicate with the modem via the interface. The modem includes a modem processor configured to control components of the modem and to communicate with the host via the interface. The modem processor is further configured to communicate information on a reduced activity state and a time remaining until a next event of the modem to the host processor. The host processor is further configured to reduce an operation of at least one component of the communication device based on receipt of the information on the reduced activity state of the modem and the time remaining until the next event of the modem.

Methods and devices for allocating power among a plurality of circuits in a communication device, including determining a power budget for allocating to the plurality of circuits from a power supply information; receiving an activity status from a first circuit of the plurality of circuits; determining a first power value based on the activity status; deriving a second power value based on the first power value and the power budget; and allocating power to one or more remaining circuits of the plurality of circuits based on the second power value.

A mobile radio communication device may operate in a wireless communication network including at least one base station configured to transmit control information and content to the mobile radio communication device. The mobile radio communication device may receive a number of communications transmitted by a base station in a number of time frames. The communication device may analyze whether the communications from the base station include control information addressed to the communication device. Based on the analysis, the mobile radio communication device may automatically predict whether an communication transmitted by the base station in an time frame will include control information addressed to the communication device. Based on the prediction, the mobile radio communication device may manage the power consumption of at least one of its components during the time frame.

A thermal finite-state-automaton includes system states and transitions between the system states. The system states may be based on a combination of network parameters for communicating through the wireless communication system and UE processing parameters. A default state is for operation of the UE at a sustainable performance configuration level for the network parameters and the UE processing parameters to maintain a UE temperature below a first temperature threshold. A high state is for operation of the UE during up to a maximum time duration at a peak performance configuration level for the network parameters and the UE processing parameters. A recovery state is for operation of the UE during at least a minimum time duration at a reduced performance configuration level for the network parameters and the UE processing parameters. An emergency shutdown state is triggerable by the UE temperature exceeding a second temperature threshold.

Systems, methods, and devices to prevent overheating from high performance device configurations in wireless networks

A communication terminal is described comprising a transceiver configured to communicate using carrier aggregation according to a first carrier aggregation setting, a detector configured to detect a need for the communication terminal to reduce its power consumption and a controller configured to initiate a switch from the first carrier aggregation setting to a second carrier aggregation setting with reduced power consumption compared to the first carrier aggregation setting if the detector has detected a need for the communication terminal to reduce its power consumption.
