A method and apparatus are provided for refining the domain wall spacing of a grain-oriented silicon steel sheet by mechanical scribing using a solid anvil roll and a scribing roller including scribing segments arranged side by side along an arbor. The arbor carries inflatable bladder ribs along the length of the arbor to provide uniform contact pressure exerted by scribing surfaces of the strip.

A misting jet apparatus is provided for producing an air-water mist comprising a water nozzle that produces an expanding stream of water droplets which enters an air-mixing nozzle wherein air introduced to said mixing nozzle converts the expanding stream of water droplets into an air-water mist which exits as a jet having high cooling capacity at relatively low air pressures, and is adapted for metallurgical quenching applications.

Individual charges of silicon steel are passed through a tunnel type furnace provided with charge and discharge vestibules. The annealing takes place in a hydrogen atmosphere and the vestibules are purged with nitrogen and then with hydrogen. The hydrogen used for purging is taken from the hydrogen in the annealing atmosphere and additional new hydrogen is added to the annealing atmosphere at the same time to maintain the pressure constant.
