A cylindrical grinder for effecting stock removal from a cam surface on a workpiece comprising apparatus for supporting the workpiece for rotation about a predetermined axis, grinding assembly including a grinding wheel, apparatus for defining a selected velocity profile for each revolution of the workpiece, the velocity profile having a plurality of acceleration/deceleration segments each having first and second radiused end portions each terminating at one end tangential to the constant velocity direction, the defining apparatus including pulse driven stepping motor apparatus which will rotate the workpiece one complete revolution when issued a predetermined number of pulses, and pulse generating apparatus for driving the stepping motor apparatus including an oscillator for generating a continuous train of pulses at a fixed rate or frequency and divide by N apparatus for defining which pulses of the pulse train will be successively issued to the stepping motor apparatus so as to provide a selected velocity to the cam surface.

Cylindrical grinding machine

A grinding system for grinding the crankpins on a crankshaft having an even plurality of symmetrically spaced pins comprising a number of cylindrical grinding machines equal to half the plurality of pins each for grinding a single pin located at a distinct radial and axial position, apparatus for depositing a crankshaft at a selected start location, apparatus for displacing the crankshaft from the selected start location sequentially to each of the grinding machines and to an end location so that half of the pins will be ground, apparatus for transferring the crankshaft, with half of its pins ground, from the end location to the start location and for turning the crankshaft end for end so that the crankshaft will be again displaced by the displacing apparatus sequentially to the grinding machines so that the remaining half of the pins will be ground.

Grinding system

A cylindrical grinding machine comprising workpiece clamping means including a throwblock and a jaw member, a workpiece loader including workpiece engaging means, a workpiece unloader including workpiece engaging means, means for displacing the loader workpiece engaging means along an arcuate path from a retracted position to an advanced position whereat a workpiece will be placed in the throwblock, means for displacing the jaw member along an arcuate path from a retracted position to an advanced position whereat a workpiece may be clamped within the throwblock, and means for displacing the unloader workpiece support means along an arcuate path from a retracted position to an advanced position whereat the workpiece engaging means will engage a workpiece clamped within the workpiece clamping means, the arcuate paths of the jaw member and loader and unloader workpiece engaging means being substantially tangent at their advanced position to a single straight line.

A workpiece transporting structure for use with a cylindrical grinding machine having a workpiece clamping assembly, comprising means for delivering workpieces to the clamping assembly including a plurality of laterally spaced workpiece supports, lift and carry means for sequentially advancing supported workpieces to the forwardmost workpiece support, a loading arm having a workpiece holder displaceable from a first position to a second position whereat a held workpiece can be clamped by the clamping assembly, the holder, located at the first position, comprising the forwardmost workpiece support, and means for removing workpieces from the clamping means including a second plurality of laterally spaced workpiece supports, lift and carry means for sequentially advancing workpieces from the rearwardmost workpiece support of the removing means, and unloading arm having a workpiece holder displaceable from a first position to a second position whereat a workpiece clamped in the clamping assembly can be held, the unloading arm holder, located at the first position, comprising the rearwardmost workpiece support.

Workpiece transporting structure for use with a cylindrical grinder

A cylindrical grinder comprising means including a drive plate and a clamping assembly secured to the drive plate for rotating a workpiece about a selected axis, the workpiece having an end main bearing, a first work diameter to be machined, a second main bearing intermediate the end bearing and the first work diameter and adjacent the first work diameter, a second work diameter, which is not to be ground while the first work diameter is being ground, located intermediate the second main bearing and the end bearing and adjacent the second main bearing, a grinding wheel assembly including a grinding wheel for effecting stock removal from the first work diameter, the clamping assembly including means for clamping the end main bearing and the second main bearing of the workpiece to prevent the axial or rotational displacement of the workpiece relative to the clamping assembly.

Cylindrical grinder

The crankpins of a crankshaft mounted in a workpiece carriage are successively ground to a desired size by a sequence of movements of a grinding wheel moved under the control of a control circuit. The crankshaft is mounted in clamping mechanisms latched closed and rotatably driven by associated headstocks. During the grinding operation, each crankpin to be ground is axially positioned by an axial locator mechanism mounted on a positioner mechanism which is moved between rest and operating positions, and the final grinding of each crankpin is effected while a retractable work rest mounted on the positioner is pressed against the crankpin. After each pin is ground, the workpiece carriage is traversed and the crankshaft is rotated to position the next crankpin for grinding, and when the final crankpin has been ground the machine returns to an initial position where the clamps are unlatched and opened to enable the ground crankshaft to be replaced by another workpiece. The movements of the various mechanisms of the machine are detected by the operation of limit switches and other switches interfacing with a sequence controller which produces signals continuing the operation of the machine. To facilitate the detection and correction of a fault condition disabling the automatic operation of the machine, a fault detector arrangement is provided which senses an incorrect initial condition by the absence of the operation of one of the limit switches and provides a visible indication of the fault by energizing a light associated with the particular fault.
