A door latch has a housing for installation in a prepared cavity at a door edge and has interchangeable faceplates for finishing the door edge. The interchangeable faceplates each have an opening for permitting extension and retraction of a latch bolt, have a peripheral shape required for compatibility with the prepared cavity, and have features providing for releasably securing the faceplates to the housing and to the door edge. This permits installation of door latches regardless of the door preparation by merely interchanging the faceplates to match the door preparation.

A cylindrical lock on a door panel has an outside actuating lever and an outside nut. Torque from both the nut and the outside lever is transferred to a substantially planar torque plate engaging the door panel and having a central opening bounded by arcuate edge surfaces spaced away from external threads on the lock hub. The central opening is also bounded by chordal edge surfaces disposed next to chordal surfaces on the lock hub. The nut has chordal surfaces next to the chordal surfaces of the torque plate and has arcuate surfaces close to the arcuate surfaces of the torque plate, all of such surfaces being in the plane of the torque plate.

Cylindrical lock

A lockset for use on any one of various door panels of different thickness and hinged on a door frame includes a latchbolt adapted to project into a holder on the door frame and to retract therefrom. Inner and outer knobs are rotatably mounted on opposite sides of the door panel to rotate about a common axis and relative to inner and outer escutcheons held against the panel of whatever thickness. Inner and outer spindles are engaged by the knobs and turn in the escutcheons. The spindles rotate a rectangular tube interengaged with the latchbolt for all axial positions of the knobs to provide retraction thereof. A push button in the inner knob, when latched in a depressed position, secures the outer knob against rotation by a nonrotatable engagement with the inner escutcheon. Rotation of the inner knob releases the push button from the depressed position and frees the outer knob for rotation. An aperture in the outer knob allows insertion of an emergency tool to release the push button from the depressed position.

Lockset for a door panel

The invention provides a simple, inexpensive, efficient means of converting a standard doorknob into a lever operated doorknob which may be easily operated by the handicapped. The invention allows the use of existing hardware trim and can be retro-fitted to existing installations.

A double cylinder safety lock has a bolt projected and retracted by a device having a rotatable hub. A key operated exterior device has a lost-motion connection to the rotatable hub so the key can be extracted from the device with the bolt in projected position or retracted position. A key operated interior device has either a direct or a lost-motion connection (depending upon the key used) to the rotatable hub, the hub connections being arranged to turn together. A key for the interior device can project and retract the bolt but can be extracted only when the bolt is in retracted position.
