A process for absorbing polar materials using a crosslinked polymeric composition such as poly-2-ethyloxazoline and ethyleneamine tetracetic acid. The crosslinked polymeric composition swells into a gel-like mass in the presence of polar materials to entrap them.

Process for absorbing polar materials using transamidated

A polymeric composition comprising a poly-2-oxazoline reacted by transamidation with a carboxylic acid, anhydride, salts of a carboxylic acid or combination thereof which can be blended with another polymeric composition to form a water wettable blend. In another aspect, the poly-2-oxazoline is crosslinked with a polybasic carboxylic acid by transamidation. The crosslinked polymeric composition is useful as an absorbent for polar materials.

Transamidated poly-2-oxazoline compositions useful as wetting agents for

Precipitation at relatively high pH levels, e.g. above about 4 or more, in an acidic water/alcohol type fountain composition containing polyvalent metal cations and, as an active polymer component for rendering the non-image areas of a lithographic plate hydrophilic, a polyacrylamide-based polymer having a weight average molecular weight (M.sub.w) of from about 5,000 to about 1,000,000 and having from about 3 to about 70 percent of the carbonyl sites as carboxyl groups, or a blend of polyacrylamide and polyacrylic acid, or the like, is controlled by providing in the fountain composition an effective amount of an organic chelating agent for polyvalent metal cations which is substantially inert with respect to the active polymer component. The suitable chelating agents are further characterized in that at 25.degree. C, each (A) has a 1:1 stability constant with zinc of at least about 10.sup.7.5 ; (B) has a solubility of at least about 0.001 moles per liter in the water/alcohol solvent system over the pH range of from about 3 to about 7; and (C) when in a stable complexed form with polyvalent metal cation(s), has a solubility of at least about 0.001 moles per liter in the water/alcohol solvent system over the pH range of from about 3 to about 7. A preferred chelating agent is the pentasodium salt of diethylenetriaminepentaacetic acid.

Fountain compositions for use in lithographic printing comprising

A stable, aqueous composition comprising an electroconductive resin, e.g., poly (vinylbenzyl trimethyl ammonium chloride), and a latex of an organic polymer stabilized by cationic moiety is applied as a coating to a non-conductive substrate such as paper or a plastic film to provide an article having decreased surface electrical resistivity and increased resistance to organic solvents. Such compositions are particularly useful in the manufacture of electrographic printing papers.

Electroconductive coating composition containing cationic latexes

An electroconductive composition useful for coating raw paper stock is provided by combining (1) an electroconductive resin, e.g., poly(vinyl/benzyl trimethyl ammonium chloride) and (2) a water-swellable, cross-linked polymer, e.g., crosslinked polyacrylamide, in the form of discrete particles having swollen diameters in the range from about 1 to about 100 micrometers. Application of this electroconductive coating composition to paper or to some other nonconductive substrate yields an article having decreased surface electrical resistivity and increased organic solvent resistance or holdout. Solvent resistance and other coating properties are further enhanced by including in the electroconductive composition a water-dispersible, film-forming amide polymer and a low viscosity binder such as a latex of styrene/butadiene copolymer.
