A construction beam includes a pair of lateral members and a resilient web extending therebetween, so as to present a cross-sectional profile corresponding to commonly used construction beam members. The resilience of the web helps to attenuate sound transmission through the beam from one lateral member to the other. Ends of the resilient web are fixed to respective ones of the lateral members on opposite sides of an imaginary reference plane passing orthogonally through both of the lateral members. In particular, in a wall frame, the lateral members are mounted at opposite ends thereof to end plates consisting of other construction beams according to the present invention. When used in a frame of a building structure, the lateral members of the end plates on the same side are attached to the surrounding structure, leaving the other side of the frame resiliently free floating.

Resilient construction member

A resiliently flexible construction beam includes a pair of lateral flange portions and a web extending therebetween, preferably, but not necessarily, so as to present a cross-sectional profile corresponding to commonly used construction beam members (e.g., 2&Prime;&times;4&Prime; or 2&Prime;&times;6&Prime;). The resilience of the beam helps to attenuate sound transmission through the beam from one lateral member to the other. In particular, in a wall frame, beams according to the present invention are mounted at opposite ends thereof to end plates. In one example, the end plates include slits into which the webs of the beams can be received. The resilient web according to the present invention is conveniently made from a unitary piece of material such as, for example, steel.

Resilient construction member, especially a unitary construction member

A type of (and method of making) fiberglass insulation is disclosed. Such insulation comprises: glass fibers; a polyacrylic glycerol (PAG) binder coating said glass fibers; and at least one of a coloring agent and a biocide adhered to said PAG binder. Such fiberglass insulation can take the form of a batt, board (a heated and compressed batt) or molding media (a different form of heated and compressed batt). The coloring agent and/or the biocide can be applied where the batt (or board or molding media, as the case may be) is manufactured or can be applied after the batt is installed in the field.

Colorable fiberglass insulation

A quick and easy technology for attaching, and facilitating reconfiguration (detachment and reattachment) of, panels to walls that uses a clamp assembly including a base, a receptacle attached to the base and a clasp that fits into and attaches to the receptacle. The clasp has resilient arms and a head. Insertion of the resilient arms of the clasp into the receptacle draws the head towards the base, which produces a clamping action. Alternatively, the clamp assembly includes a channel having sidewalls attached to a base and at least one fastener having a blade-like shank and a head. The sidewalls converge so as to be more closely spaced together at the opening of the channel than at its base. The at least one fastener appears T-shaped in cross section, and is sized so that insertion of the blade-like shank into the channel widens the opening. Alternatively, the clamp assembly includes a first clamping piece and a second clamping piece configured to cooperatively engage each other. The first and second clamping pieces include the members of a reclosable fastener pair, such as hook and loop connector pair or strips of mushroom-shaped stems.

Fabric retainers and methods for installing the fabric retainers within an acoustically treated room. The fabric retainers have a fabric retaining portion, and a chase or a raceway for running wires within the interior of the retainers. The chase has an open side which allows fasteners to be installed through the base of the retainer, and which allows for the insertion of wires into the chase. Retainers also have a retainer groove in which an acoustical fabric is secured, and a fabric retaining pocket to store the inserted fabric. Alternative retainer embodiments have two retainer grooves. A removeable cover is provided to secure the wiring within the chase, and to conceal the wiring within the chase. Also disclosed are methods for combining various retainer embodiments within a structure.

Fabric retainer for acoustic structure and methods of installation

An acoustically significant composite panel having a general sound-absorbing face (or a general sound-diffusing face) and a tuned sound-absorbing face. Such a panel includes a sandwich or composite of a first layer of molding media, a honeycomb of cells and a second layer of molding media. The first layer has at least one or more apertures in it that convert the corresponding cells into Helmholtz resonators. These Helmholtz resonators can be tuned to the same or different frequencies. The second layer is generally sound-absorbing. A general diffuser structure can be attached to the second layer. These panels can be attached to the walls and/or ceilings of a room to control its sonic quality. Also, these panels can be suspended vertically below a ceiling to control noise.

Dual sonic character acoustic panel and systems for use thereof

Acoustical housing for supporting and enhancing the performance of speakers. A preferred apparatus includes a support well that is fabricated from acoustically absorptive material and is adapted to be mounted between wall or ceiling studs. A cover or a portion of wall board may be installed to completely enclose the support well within the wall to define a cavity into which a portion of a speaker body may extend. The speaker or speakers are affixed to the cover or wallboard in a conventional manner such that the speaker body extends into the cavity and the sound emitting surface of the speaker is exposed. Methods for installing the acoustical housings into existing wall or ceiling structures without compromising the acoustical and structural integrities of such structures are also disclosed.

Apparatus for supporting an acoustical diffuser panel within a structure. A preferred apparatus includes a rigid support member fabricated from an acoustically absorptive material. The support member has a bottom and upstanding side walls that define a well that is sized to receive a diffuser panel therein. The diffuser panel may comprise a plurality of column members that are integrally formed with a planar bottom surface and extend therefrom. At least one column member is longer than at least one other column member. Another diffuser panel that can be successfully used has a series of elongated columns that extend for the width or length of the panel. At least one column member extends a distance above the bottom of the support member that differs from the distance that another column extends above the support member when the panel is received therein. A method for installing at least one acoustical diffuser assembly into a wall structure and an acoustical wall structure are also disclosed.

Acoustical diffuser apparatus for supporting and enhancing the performance of speakers. A preferred apparatus includes a diffuser panel that has an outwardly facing non-planar diffuser surface and an opening corresponding to each speaker for receiving at least a portion of the corresponding speaker therein. The diffuser panel does not cover the sound emitting surface of at least one speaker. The diffuser panel may have acoustically transparent material affixed thereto. Methods for installing the diffuser panels into existing wall or ceiling structures without compromising the structural integrity of such structures are also disclosed.

An acoustical diffuser is disclosed for diffusing sound. A preferred diffuser includes a first fibrous material, a first separator layer, a diffuser material a second separator layer, a second fibrous material and an acoustically transparent material. The subject invention also includes a preferred method of molding such diffuser. The subject invention further includes a panel that has an acoustically reflective side and an acoustically transparent side over a frequency range that can be attached to the walls of a room to enhance the acoustical characteristics of the room. A preferred method of installing such panels includes installing fabric retainer members to the walls between the panels and attaching an acoustically transparent material to the fabric retainer members such that the panels and fabric retainers are covered by the acoustically transparent material. The panels may preferably be arranged such that acoustically reflective surfaces on one wall oppose acoustically absorptive surfaces on another opposing wall. Preferably, panels are attached to the walls such that the acoustically absorptive surfaces thereof are facing the room interior where the walls abut each other to form corners. An acoustical built-in wall system and an acoustical door and method of applying an acoustical treatment to a door are also disclosed.

An insulation panel has a modular thermal insulation vacuum panel and a frame structure secured to the outer periphery. An outer edge portion of the panel and frame assembly is provided with a profile and is adapted to mate with an edge of an adjacent thermal insulation panel and frame assembly. Profile members may be inserted between insulation panels to form a wall assembly. Insulation panels have a central portion of reduced thickness so as to allow for application of conduits. The modular thermal insulation vacuum panel has insulating media enclosed within spaced panel segments.

A method for manufacturing a mineral fiber product includes establishing a stream of mineral fibers, directing polymeric fibers toward the stream of mineral fibers to cause intermingling of the polymeric material, and applying heat to the polymer fibers so that some of them become softened to the extent that they lose their fibrous form and become attached to the mineral fibers as non-fibrous particles, whereas some of the polymer fibers retain their fibrous form.

An enclosed structure is provided for use with a refrigerator having a door assembly. The enclosed structure preferably contains superinsulation materials and a plurality of matching drawers. The enclosed structure preferably includes corner joints which minimize thermal energy transfer between adjacent superinsulation panels. The refrigerator may include a cooling system having a thermoelectric device for maintaining the temperature within the refrigerator at selected values. If desired, a fluid cooling system and an active gasket may also be provided between the door assembly and the enclosed structure. The fluid cooling system preferably includes a second thermoelectric device to maintain the temperature of fluid flowing through the active gasket at a selected value. The drawers associated with the refrigerator may be used for gathering, processing, shipping and storing food or other perishable items.
