A spacer (200) for a field emission display (201) is disclosed. The spacer (200) includes a lower resistive region (220) and an upper insulative region (222). The spacer (200) has a member (210) which is coated with a resistive coating (212) extending between the lower end of the member and a height (h.sub.2) less than the total height (h.sub.1) of the spacer (200). An insulative coating (218) is formed on the member (210) and extends between the upper end of the resistive coating (212) and the upper end of the member (210). The resistive coating (212) has a secondary electron yield less than 2 over the lower resistive region (220) of the spacer (200). The insulative coating (218) has a secondary electron yield between 0.75-2 over the upper insulative region (222) of the spacer (200).

An improved field emission device (200, 800) includes a supporting substrate (210, 810), a conductive layer (215, 815) formed on the supporting substrate (210,810), a dielectric layer (240, 840) formed on the conductive layer (215, 815) and defining an emitter well (260, 860), a charge bleed-off barrier (290, 890)provided on the lateral surfaces (245, 845) of the emitter well, an electron emitter (270, 870) located within the emitter well (260, 860), a gate extraction electrode (250, 850) formed on the dielectric layer (240, 840) and spaced from the electron emitter (270, 870), and an anode (280, 880) spaced from the gate extraction electrode (250, 850).

Field emission device having a charge bleed-off barrier

A display (10) utilizes a drive scheme that minimizes power dissipation by reducing the operating frequency at which columns (12) operate. The operating frequency is reduced by positioning column timing signals (32) near an end of a horizontal display time (38,39,48,49) if the next horizontal display time also has data to be displayed.

Display control method

Emitters (14, 16, 17, 18) of a field emission display (10) are conditioned to improve electron emission. The emitters (14, 16, 17, 18) and the rows (21, 22) are operated at voltages that stimulate electron emission from the emitters (14, 16, 17, 18). An anode (23) is operated at a voltage that does not attract electrons so that the electrons are attracted to the rows (21, 22).

Method of conditioning emitters of a field emission display

A field emission device (10) has an anode (18) that is used to attract electrons emitter by an emitter (13). An inductor (19) is coupled in series between the anode (18) and a voltage source (21) in order to prevent arcing between the anode (18) and the emitter (13) of the field emission device (10).
