A corrosion resistant, alkali resistant coating composition is disclosed. The composition comprises a binder comprising a reaction product of an epoxy-containing material and a phosphorus-containing material together with a curing agent. Aminoplasts, especially melamine-based aminoplasts, are particularly suitable curing agents. A source of silicon can optionally be included. The compositions also provide excellent adhesion and can be used with or without a weldable primer. The compositions are applied to and cured on a metal substrate.

A weldable coating composition is disclosed. The composition comprises a binder in which is dispersed a conductive pigment and a source of silicon. Enhanced corrosion protection is offered, without sacrificing weldability of the coating layer. The composition is applied to and cured on a metal substrate.

A curable coating composition is disclosed comprising a resinous binder comprising (a) a reaction product of an epoxy-containing polymer with a compound containing phosphorus acid groups, the reaction product having reactive functional groups, and (b) a curing agent having functional groups reactive with the functional groups of (a). An electroconductive pigment is dispersed in (a) such that the weight ratio of the electroconductive pigment to (a) plus (b) is within the range of 0.5 to 9.0:1. When the curable coating composition is deposited and cured on a metal substrate, the cured coating is weldable.

A method for determining the thickness of a dryable or curable film-forming coating by incorporating a fluorescent component into the coating. The fluorescent component is either a resin solid of the coating, a fluorescent dye or a fluorescent dye attached to a resin solid of the coating. The coating is exposed to ultraviolet or visible light which causes the fluorescent component to fluoresce. The intensity of the fluorescence of the coating is measured and the thickness or weight of the coating is determined from a known mathematical relationship between the fluorescence intensity of the coating when exposed to the light and the thickness or weight of the coating. Additionally, a curable or dryable film-forming coating composition including a curable or dryable organic resin reacted with a fluorescent tag is provided.

The present invention provides a metal substrate coated with a first pretreatment composition including a transition element-containing material having one or more Group IIIB elements, Group IVB elements, lanthanide series elements or mixtures thereof; and a second pretreatment composition including a reaction product of at least one epoxy-functional material or derivative thereof and at least phosphorus-containing material, amine-containing material and/or sulfur-containing material deposited upon the first pretreatment composition. Disclosed is a temporary, protective dry lubricating coating composition which when deposited and dried on a metallic substrate, is removable by contacting with an aqueous alkaline cleaning solution. The coating composition comprises (a) a wax present in an amount up to 20 weight percent; (b) a base-neutralized, acid functional polymer which is the polymerization reaction product of (i) a polymerizable, ethylenically unsaturated monomer having acid functionality and (ii) at least one polymerizable, ethylenically unsaturated monomer different from (i); and (c) an amine containing an acyclic moiety of from 8 to 30 carbon atoms, the amine being different from the base used to neutralize the acid functional polymer (b). The temporary protective coating is compatible with a wide range of adhesives and sealants used in the assembly of automobiles.

Zinc phosphate aqueous coating compositions containing tungsten and using an accelerator which is an oxime, hydroxylamine sulfate or a mixture thereof are disclosed. The accelerators are environmentally friendly and stable in the acidic environment of zinc phosphate coating compositions so as to enable formation of a one-package system. The tungsten component avoids the use of nickel or cobalt ions in the compositions which are environmentally objectionable.
