An apparatus for managing optical subsea communications system may include a plurality of fiber interface modules (FIM), wherein a given FIM comprises a receive part, and a transmit part. The transmit part may include two normally closed switches, wherein a first switch of the two normally closed switches is coupled to a line monitoring equipment (LME) TX port, and wherein a second switch of the two normally closed switches is coupled to a line terminating equipment (LTE) TX port.

A system and method that enforces one or more policy rules on user-allocated bandwidth portions of the overall system bandwidth, for example in an optical fiber transmission system. The policy rules may limit, for example, the range of optical wavelengths, the acceptable range on the output-power-spectral density and/or the total per-band optical power within the user-allocated bandwidth that a user may provide on the system. The system may include one or more user control units that receives respective user output signals and applies all policy rules. The resulting optical output(s) of the UCU(s) may be provided an optical transmission path for transmission to a receiving terminal. In the receiving terminal, one or more UCU(s) may apply receiver policy rules, for instance by limiting the range of wavelengths transmitted to a receive subsystem. In addition, the system may be configured to dynamically add and/or remove loading signals to the transmitted signal in response to changes in loading of the user-allocated portions of the system bandwidth, e.g. through dropping or adding of channels by a user or by equipment failures.

System and method for applying system policies in an optical communication system having user-allocated bandwidth

Techniques for providing high-resolution, standard-format output for line monitoring equipment (LME) of a wavelength division multiplexed (WDM) communication system is disclosed. LME may transmit a plurality of LME test signals via an optical path of the WDM system and perform gain measurements on reflections associated with the same at predetermined intervals. Gain measurements for each of the plurality of LME test signals may be normalized and filtered to derive LME peak data. The WDM communication system may perform full scans with data points totaling millions/billions (e.g., depending on system length, fiber type, and number of transmitted LME test signals or test pulses) and normalize the same into a relatively small number of resulting data points within the LME peak data. The WDM system may then output an LME results file in a standard format which is compatible with commercial viewers and optical time domain reflectometer (OTDR) equipment.

Techniques for high-resolution line monitoring with a standardized output and an optical communication system using the same

In general, a wavelength division multiplexed (WDM) communication system simultaneously pre-filters and combines groups of wavelengths with orthogonal polarizations to provide a pre-filtered, pair-wise orthogonal aggregate WDM optical signal. In particular, an orthogonally-combining interleaving filter multiplexer provides substantially orthogonal polarizations for odd and even channel wavelengths and simultaneously pre-filters and combines the orthogonally polarized odd and even channel wavelengths using interleaver optics. The orthogonal polarizations may be provided by orientation of PM input fibers or by a polarization rotator in the orthogonally-combining interleaving filter multiplexer.

A safety interlocking arrangement for use with a doped fiber amplifier and its associated pump source(s). A pair of metallized jumper cables are used to interconnect the amplifier and pump source, where the physically connections to the housings are electrically isolated. Within the pump source, an isolated power supply, in series with a control switch (such as an optical coupler) is connected between the isolated fiber coupling ports. Within the doped fiber amplifier, a diode is connected between the isolated amplifier fiber coupling ports. When the metallized jumper fiber cables are properly connected between the pump source and the amplifier, the electrical circuit is completed and a low level current will flow. The current activates the control switch within the pump source, where the control switch functions to turn 'on' the pump source lasers. If either metallized jumper fiber is misconnected, broken or missing, no current will flow. Therefore, the control switch will remain open and the lasers will remain inactive.

Safety interlocking system for an optical fiber amplifier and pump source

A dual-stage doped fiber amplifier is provided which utilizes a single pump laser and a passive power splitter to pump both amplifier stages. The passive splitter couples a first portion of the power output of the single pump laser to a first stage amplifier and a second portion of the pump power to the second stage. In this manner, the performance characteristics of the amplifier can be controlled by utilizing a single pump source.

The in-fiber safety interlock system includes a high power (Class IV) laser interlocked to an OTDR. A plurality of WDM data signals are transmitted over the fiber system, including a terminal portion and an extended portion. A control circuit is connected to the laser and the OTDR. The OTDR monitors the integrity of the fiber system, including both the terminal portion and the extended portion. If the OTDR detects a fault in the optical transmission path, the OTDR and the control circuit operate to automatically disable or shut down the laser.

Interlocked high power fiber system using OTDR

An optical gain block that is pumped by one or more pump input modules is disclosed. Each pump input module includes a pump source, a pump power control circuit and a bus interface. Each of the available pump input modules detect the presence and pump power of other available pump input modules in order to properly adjust the output power of its own pump source. By controlling the power provided by each of the available pump input modules, the gain block output will be maintained at a specified output power level while all pump input modules share in delivering the required total input pump power. Upon the insertion or removal of any pump input module, the remaining pump input modules will adjust their output power accordingly to maintain the gain block output power at the specified level.
