The retainer portion of the mouthpiece of an underwater breathing apparatus includes at least a portion made of a thermoplastic material. The retainer is customized to the bite of the user by heating the mouthpiece to render the retainer plastic. The retainer, while plastic, is gripped by the teeth of the user to form an impression of the user's bite in the thermoplastic material of the retainer. In one embodiment, the thermoplastic portion of the retainer comprises only a sleeve of thermoplastic material which is affixed over the conventional rubber retaining member. In an alternative embodiment, the thermoplastic retainer is formed as an integral molded portion of the mouthpiece.

Customized mouthpiece retainer for an underwater breathing apparatus

A gauge for measuring pressure is described having a casing, a transparent lens, a faceplate bearing indicia and indices, a primary depth pointer, a maximum depth pointer, and a rack-and-pinion gear assembly for moving the pointers relative to the indicia and the indices. In the rack-and-pinion gear assembly there is provided a spring-biased rack, a pinion gear and a flexible diaphragm. The pinion gear is mounted on a shaft supporting the primary depth pointer. The rack is threadably coupled to the gear and adapted to be moved linearly for turning the gear and the shaft. The diaphragm is mounted in a selected manner in a bore in the casing in contact with one end of the rack. The opposite end of the rack is in contact with a spring. A change in ambient pressure relative to the pressure within the casing moves the diaphragm and rack against the spring and rotates the pointers. The maximum pressure indiciator, which is driven by the primary depth pointer, is provided for indicating maximum pressure.

A mouthpiece for a snorkel, regulator or other underwater or above water breathing apparatus, having hollow retainer tabs made of pliable material so that the tabs readily collapse to comfortably conform to an approximate dental impression of the user.

In a swim fin, members are provided for maintaining a swimmer's foot in a predetermined angular relationship with respect to the swimmer's leg, particularly during a downward kick or leg extension mode. Movement of the ankle relative to the leg is substantially restricted, and stress that would be placed on the ankle in the utilization of a prior swim fin is transmitted to the leg. In two embodiments, a rigid member, such as a wall or brace, extends from the foot-receiving portion of the fin to engage the swimmer's lower shin. Straps from the shin brace maintain the swimmer's leg and foot in the predetermined relationship to the swim fin. Adjustable members may be provided for adjusting the selected, angular relationship between the shin brace and the swimmer's foot and leg. In a third embodiment, a tubular assembly is provided for engaging a lower rear portion of the swimmer's leg, preferably below the calf. In this embodiment, the engaging assembly is provided to pivot for facilitating walking and standing while wearing the fin. It is also adjustable for fitting feet of different sizes.

In a swim fin, members are provided for maintaining a swimmer's foot in fixed angular relationship with respect to the swimmer's leg, particularly during a downward kick or leg extension mode. The ankle is substantially locked in one position, and stress that would be placed on the ankle in the utilization of a prior swim fin is transmitted to the leg. In one embodiment, a rigid member extends from the foot-receiving portion of the fin to engage the swimmer's lower shin. Straps maintain the swimmer's leg and foot in fixed relationship to the swim fin. Adjustable members may be provided for adjusting the selected, fixed angular relationship between the swimmer's foot and leg.

A decompression analog computer and indicator includes an ambient pressure sensing chamber exposed to hydrostatic pressure as experienced by the diver. The pressure in sensing chamber produces a flow of fluid between the sensing chamber and a pair of parallel connected second chambers via the intermediary of first and second diffusion membranes introducing a delay to simulate different tissues of the body. Each of the second chambers has a movable wall portion operatively connected to a spring biased pressure responsive indicating piston. The indicating pistons move to and fro in a track overlying at indicating scale visible to the diver. The indicators indicate uptake and release of nitrogen by different tissues within the body and indicate to the diver when decompression is necessary.
