A method is provided to operate a thermal anemometer flow meter to measure a property of a stream. The method includes measuring a first heat loss to the stream from operating at a first DeltaT above a temperature of the stream, measuring a second heat loss to the stream from operating at a second DeltaT above the temperature of the stream where the second DeltaT being greater than the first DeltaT. The method further includes determining the property of the stream based on the first and the second heat losses.

Operating a high accuracy thermal anemometer flow meter in gas stream containing liquid droplets

A flow body flow meter includes a flow body, a heater, and a sensor. The flow body includes an inlet, an outlet, and an internal passage coupling the inlet and the outlet. The heater evaporates at least some liquid droplets in a stream received by the flow body. The sensor has one or more sensor probes in the flow body to measure a fluid property of the stream.

Heated wet gas flow meter

A flow body flow meter includes a flow body and a sensor having one or more probes in the flow body. As a wet gas stream enters the flow body, an internal passage imparts angular momentum to the stream to induce a rotating flow. The wet gas stream at least intermittently carries liquid phase particles and the inertia of the denser liquid phase particles separates them from the rotating flow. The probes of the sensor are located in a part of the rotating flow that is free of any liquid phase particles. The internal passage may include an axial swirler and a cylindrical section downstream from the axial swirler. The axial swirler imparts the nonlinear motion to the stream, and tips of the probes are located near a center axis of the cylindrical section so they are free of any liquid phase particles.

Thermal anemometer flow meter for the measurement of wet gas flow

Processes are provided for making partially coated monolith catalysts that are useful, for example, as pre-combustor catalysts for diesel exhaust aftertreatment. Monolith substrates are provided with interconnectivity and/or temporary barriers that allow from about 10 to about 90% of the monolith channels to be coated after the monolith substrate is assembled without having to carefully pick out among a large number of openings which ones to inject into or which ones to plug. The invention includes options of injecting into a multipath monolith substrate and of emplacing blocking material during monolith construction. Either catalyst coating material or coat-blocking material can be injected. Blocking materials allow the use of machinery for ordinarily non-selective processes, such as machinery for dip coating. Both multipath injections and pre-placed barriers can be used in a single partial coating process.

Preparation method for a partially coated monolith

The present invention provides systems and methods to improve the performance and emission control of internal combustion engines equipped with nitrogen oxides storage-reduction ('NSR') emission control systems. The system generally includes a NSR catalyst, a fuel processor located upstream of the NSR catalyst, and at least one fuel injection port. The fuel processor converts a fuel into a reducing gas mixture comprising CO and H. The reducing gas mixture is then fed into the NSR catalyst, where it regenerates the NSR adsorbent, reduces the NOto nitrogen, and optionally periodically desulfates the NSR catalyst. The fuel processor generally includes one or more catalysts, which facilitate reactions such as combustion, partial oxidation, and/or reforming and help consume excess oxygen present in an engine exhaust stream. The methods of the present invention provide for NSR catalyst adsorbent regeneration using pulsed fuel flow. Control strategies are also provided.

System and method for improved emission control of internal combustion engines using pulsed fuel flow

An exhaust aftertreatment system is provided with a large channel combustor, a fuel reformer, and a lean NOtrap. The lean NOtrap is denitrated by steps comprising: heating the fuel reformer to steam reforming temperatures by introducing vaporized fuel to the large channel combustor and combusting a portion of the vaporized fuel under lean conditions, then making the exhaust-injected fuel mixture overall rich, whereby the fuel reformer produces syn gas that denitrates the lean NOtrap. The fuel reformer has a low thermal mass, whereby it is designed to heat to at least about 500&#xb0; C. and catalyze steam reforming reaction with each denitration. The large channel combustor is a monolith having an average channel size larger than the fuel reformer and a thermal mass no more than about 20% that of the fuel reformer, whereby the large channel combustor facilitates low temperature startup of the fuel reformer.

Described here are systems and methods for reducing emissions of IC engines using a fuel processor bypass. In general, the systems described here include an exhaust pipe, a bypass pipe, a valve, a fuel processor, a fuel injector, and a NOtrap. When the valve is in the open position, the entire exhaust passes through the bypass pipe. When the valve is in a closed position, the entire exhaust passes through the exhaust pipe. In some variations, the systems described here also comprise a pre-combustor, a thermal mass, a mixer, and/or a DPF. Methods for regenerating or desulfating a NOtrap are also described. Typically these methods include introducing exhaust into an exhaust pipe, opening a valve located at the inlet of a bypass pipe, injecting fuel upstream of a fuel processor, and introducing a reducing mixture into a NOtrap. The injection of fuel may be pulsed or continuous.

In one aspect, a method for controlling a fuel processor is provided, the method including i) determining a temperature of an exhaust flow to the fuel processor, the fuel processor including a fuel processor catalyst; ii) determining a concentration of O2 in the exhaust flow upstream of the fuel processor catalyst; iii) determining a rate of the exhaust flow; and iv) adjusting a fuel flow rate to the fuel processor based on i), ii), iii) and a heat capacity value associated with the fuel processor. In other aspects, a system comprising logic operable to control a fuel processor is provided.

Methods and systems for controlling internal combustion engines

The invention provides methods and systems for catalytic reforming of a hydrocarbon fuel to produce hydrogen, which may be used as a power source for a fuel cell. In some embodiments, hydrogen is produced by partial oxidation or autothermal reforming of fuel in an oxygen containing gas stream that is rich the majority of the time, with periodic conversion to a lean gas stream for short periods of time to maintain catalytic activity. In one embodiment, hydrogen peroxide is used as the oxidant in an autothermal reforming process. In some embodiments, hydrogen is produced by steam reforming at a low steam to carbon ratio, with a periodic increase in the steam to carbon ratio for short periods of time to maintain catalytic activity.

The invention also provides devices and methods for removal of NOfrom an Ocontaining gas stream, particularly the oxygen-rich exhaust stream from a lean-burning engine, such as a diesel engine. The invention includes a fuel processor that efficiently converts added hydrocarbon fuel to a reducing mixture of Hand CO. The added fuel may be a portion of the onboard fuel on a vehicle. The Hand CO are incorporated into the exhaust stream and reacted over a selective lean NOcatalyst to convert NOto N. thereby providing an efficient means of NOemission control.

System and methods for improved emission control of internal combustion engines using pulsed fuel flow

Described here are systems and methods for treating fuel injected exhaust streams. In general, the systems comprise a fuel injector, a pre-combustor, and a fuel combustor. The methods described herein include methods for regenerating a NOtrap or a DPF, and methods for generating a substantially uniform fuel air mixture at a fuel combustor inlet, or a substantially uniform temperature at a fuel combustor outlet. The methods of regenerating a NOtrap typically comprise the steps of injecting fuel into an exhaust stream, passing the stream through a pre-combustor, operating the pre-combustor to at least partially combust the injected fuel, reacting the fuel and exhaust stream mixture within a fuel combustor to generate a reducing gas mixture, and introducing the reducing gas mixture into a NOtrap, whereby the NOtrap is regenerated. Similar methods for regenerating a diesel particulate filter are also described. Control strategies are also provided.
