A method of handling traffic flows across a network. The method includes issuing a request for establishing a communication pathway end to end over a network, the communication pathway including a radio communication channel and a packet communication channel, the request identifying at least one traffic flow with an associated flow treatment attribute, reporting an available flow treatment across the network, modifying the request to take into account the available flow by modifying at least one of the at least one traffic flow and the associated flow treatment attribute, and establishing the communication pathway based on the modified request.

Handling traffic flows in a mobile communications network

A method includes receiving a request for establishing a communication pathway end-to-end over a network. The communication pathway includes a radio communication channel and a packet communication channel. The request identifies a plurality of traffic flows to be carried by the communication pathway and quality-of-service attributes associated with the traffic flows. At least one traffic flow is associated with at least one quality-of-service attribute determining the quality-of-service requirement for the at least one traffic flow. A quality-of-service is negotiated, based on the quality-of-service attribute, and the negotiated quality-of-service is reported.

The invention proposes a method for establishing sessions in a network comprising a user entity, a network control node and a plurality of network nodes storing subscriber specific information, the method comprising the steps of receiving a session establishing request at the network control node, forwarding a policy request message from the network control node to each network node of the plurality of network nodes storing subscriber specific information comprising policy information required for the session to be established, processing the policy request message to generate a policy decision message and sending the policy decision message to the network control node from each of the network nodes having received the policy request message, generating a single policy decision confirmation message based on the received policy decision messages in the network control node, and sending the single policy decision message to the user entity.

Method and apparatus for dealing with a connection context request to establish a connection between a mobile station (MS) and a network gateway element. The gateway (such as a GGSN) determines whether binding information is required, then ascertains whether such information has been supplied. A system and method with policy control function (PCF) for multimedia broadcast/multicast system (MBMS) services that includes a core network, one or more application servers, and one or more policy control functions (PCF). In one embodiment, the core network includes one or more gateway GPRS support nodes (GGSN). One of the application servers provides a MBMS service. At least one policy control function is operatively connected between each GGSN and application server. MBMS session request information is sent from the MBMS service server to the policy control function. The policy control function provides authorization information for a MBMS session to the GGSN.

The invention is a method and a system for the providing of service to user equipment (UE). A method of providing services to user equipment in accordance with the invention includes providing from a database () to a policy decision entity () subscriber information regarding permitted conditions for the users to obtain the services; providing service information from at least one network or server (), regarding service offered by the at least one network or server to the user equipment, forming policy rules at the policy decision entity based upon the subscriber information and the service information. A requesting user equipment transmits a request for service to the communications network which is processed by the policy decision entity in accordance with the policy rules to determine if the service is to be allowed and if the service is allowed characteristics of the service to be provided to the requesting user equipment and the policy enforcement entity enforces at least one characteristic of an allowed service upon the communication network to insure that the allowed service obtained by the requesting user equipment has the at least one characteristic of the allowed service.
