A control apparatus for a fuel cell stack having an operation control module is provided. The operation control module is configured in terms of programming and circuitry in order to control a large number of sensor or actuator systems that are relevant to normal operation. The sensor or actuator systems relate to the operating state of the fuel cell stack during normal operation and have a safety control module that is designed in terms of programming and circuitry to control safety-relevant sensor or actuator systems. The safety-relevant sensor or actuator systems relate to the safety functions of the fuel cell stack and the safety control module is in the form of an assembly which operates autonomously with respect to the operation control module. A method for controlling the fuel cell stack and the operation control module is also provided.

Monitoring apparatus for a fuel cell stack

The operating temperature of a gas sensor capable of sensing a gas or a gas composition at a high temperature, for example 1000&#xb0; C. is maintained constant over the entire volume of a gas sensor layer or function layer () secured to a sensor carrier section of the gas sensor by supplying heat to the gas sensor layer () in such a way that varying heat dissipations in the sensor carrier section are compensated. For this purpose, an electrical heater for heating the gas sensor layer () has individual heater sections with different heating resistance values which depend on a spacing between any individual heater section and the tip of the sensor carrier section.

Arrangement of a heating layer for a high-temperature gas sensor

A fuel cell assembly has an improved gas sensor. The improved sensor measures the gas concentrations in the interior fluid passages within a fuel cell assembly or within fluid passages employed to transport reactant fluid streams to or from the fuel cell(s). The improved sensor is particularly suited for use in the environment within the reactant fluid passages of a solid polymer fuel cell assembly and is tolerant to the presence of water. The sensor employs an active electrode; a passive electrode; and an electrolyte in contact with both electrodes. The electrolyte is disposed on a substrate and a heater is located in thermal contact with the substrate for heating the substrate and the electrolyte.

Fuel cell assembly with an improved gas sensor

A gas sensor, comprises a substrate, a sensor unit including a functional layer and an electrode structure, and an electric heating and/or temperature measuring arrangement. An electrically conductive shielding structure is provided between the sensor unit and the electric heating arrangement in order to shield the measurement process at the sensor unit from interferences owing to the heating process, thereby reducing or preventing the effects of electrical fields caused by voltages applied to the heating arrangement from altering or disrupting the measurement process.

Gas sensor

A process and apparatus for selective detection of NO in fluid media, particularly exhaust gases of internal-combustion engines. This process comprises the steps of positioning a nitrosonium-conducting solid electrolyte between two porous electrodes, acting upon one of the two electrodes with the NO-containing fluid medium, and measuring a voltage difference between the two electrodes as an indication of the NO-concentration in the NO-containing fluid medium.
