Printing groups are each comprised of at least two cooperating cylinders, each of which is mounted in a bearing unit that radially displaces its associated cylinder. At least one of these bearing units is provided with an actuator which is controlled, or regulated by a control unit. An inking unit, which encompasses at least one ink application roller, is provided for each printing group. At least one of the cylinders of the printing group, and an ink application roller of the associated inking unit can optionally be placed against each other. A dampening unit, comprising at least one dampening fluid application roller, is also provided. At least one of the cylinders of the printing group and a dampening fluid application roller of the dampening unit are also optionally placed against each other. The at least one actuator for the bearing unit is remotely controlled and is embodied either as a hydraulic actuator or as a pneumatic actuator.

Vibrations of a cylinder, which is a part of a web-processing machine, and particularly a printing machine, are dampened. A functional correlation is determined for a course of a force of a channel passage through a nip point defined by the cylinder and a second cylinder. The functional correlation is pre-defined up to a scaling factor determining the height as a time course for an actuator force time course and is stored in a control or a regulating device. The vibration, or an amplitude of the vibration is measured during the operation of at least part of the cylinder by the use of a sensor. A maximum vibration amplitude on the roll body of the cylinder is then calculated from the measuring value. The actuators are controlled by the control or regulating device according to the pre-defined actuator force time course.

A printing group of a printing machine is comprised of a pair of cylinders each having a circumference that corresponds essentially to a length of a section of a side to be printed. The effective generated surface of at least one of the cylinders comprises, at the most, one break in the circumferential direction. The surface forms, in the longitudinal direction, a plurality of adjacently arranged breaks which, when viewed in the circumferential direction, are arranged in a staggered manner with respect to each other.

A cylinder of a printing unit is received in a bearing structure that includes a bearing block having a rotary bearing and which is movable along an adjustment path in linear bearings. The bearing structure is configured as a bearing unit that can be mounted as a whole. The bearing structure thus includes the rotary bearing, the bearing block and the linear bearings which enable the relative movement of the bearing block.

A blanket is located on an outer surface of a roller, such as a printing unit roller. The blanket has an elastic and/or a compressive layer with a surface pressure that depends on the degree of the impression. The layer is selected so that a depending of the surface pressure on the impression has, at least in some areas, a slope of less than 700 (N/cm)/mm.

A printing group of a printing press has two forme cylinders, and two transfer cylinders which are assigned to the two forme cylinders and which, in a print-on position, cooperate to form a printing position. The forme cylinders and the transfer cylinders each have at least one groove or slit on their shell face which groove or slit is adapted to secure ends of a blanket or a dressing. The forme cylinders have circumferences which correspond to a section length of a printed page. Rotating shafts of the forme and transfer cylinders, when in the print-on position, are located in a common plane. The circumferential width of each of the grooves or slits, in the shell faces of the cylinder does not exceed 3 mm.

A printing group of a printing machine is comprised of at least two cylinders, a forme cylinder and a transfer cylinder. The transfer cylinder can be moved between a print-on position and a print-off position along a linear adjustment path. Both of the cylinders in the printing group can be driven mechanically to rotate independently of another printing group. This rotation is accomplished by at least one drive motor which is fixed on a frame of the printing machine.

A characterizing number for a cylinder dressing having an elastic layer is determined. The characterizing number is then usable to select suitable geometries of rollers in a printing press. If the roller geometry is already known, the characterizing number facilitates the selection of a suitable dressing. The characterizing number characterizes the roll-off behavior of a dressing independently of a measuring device used to determine the number or an application in a particular printing group.

At least two cylinders of a printing machine are arranged in the printing machine. An end journal of each of the cylinders is mounted either in or on a common insert. That common insert is, in turn, detachably located in, or on a lateral frame of the printing machine.

A method for engaging and disengaging cylinders, and particularly cylinders which are disposed in a line, is disclosed. In addition to the displacement required to engage and to disengage the cylinders, steps are taken to at least reduce the relative tangential speed between the working outer surfaces of the cylinders that are to be engaged against one another or against an intermediate web. This is accomplished by the reduction of, or the impression upon the cylinders of a specific rotational speed.
