A hierarchical memory request stream arbitration technique merges coherent memory request streams from multiple memory request sources and arbitrates the merged coherent memory request stream with requests from a non-coherent memory request stream. In at least one embodiment of the invention, a method of generating a merged memory request stream from a plurality of memory request streams includes merging coherent memory requests into a first serial memory request stream. The method includes selecting, by a memory controller circuit, a memory request for placement in the merged memory request stream from at least the first serial memory request stream and a merged non-coherent request stream. The merged non-coherent memory request stream is based on an indicator of a previous memory request selected for placement in the merged memory request stream.

Hierarchical memory arbitration technique for disparate sources

A method of performing encrypted WLAN communication is provided that comprises the steps of performing a connection set-up for the encrypted WLAN communication and performing data frame encapsulation and/or decapsulation during the encrypted WLAN communication. The connection set-up is performed by executing software-implemented instructions, and the data frame encapsulation and/or decapsulation is performed by operating single-purpose hardware. In embodiments, corresponding single-purpose hardware devices, integrated circuit chips, computer program products and computer systems are provided. The embodiments may provide an improved hardware/software architecture for 802.11i security enhancement.

Hardware/software partitioning for encrypted WLAN communications

A WLAN (Wireless Local Area Network) communication device for performing communication in a WLAN network is provided that comprises a physical connection unit, a physical connection oscillator, and a control unit. The physical connection unit is for providing a physical connection of the WLAN communication device to a wireless communication medium. The physical connection oscillator is for providing a physical connection clock signal to the physical connection unit. The control unit is for controlling operation of the physical connection oscillator. The WLAN communication device is operable in a communication mode and in a deep sleep mode. The control unit is adapted to deactivate the physical connection oscillator when the deep sleep mode is entered. Embodiments may provide an extended reduction of the power consumption of the WLAN communication device.

Deep sleep mode for WLAN communication systems

A communication device for performing cryptographically secured communication in a WLAN (Wireless Local Area Network) network is provided that comprises a security enhancement unit and a MAC (Medium Access Control) unit. The security enhancement unit is for encrypting plaintext data frames into encrypted data frames and/or decrypting encrypted data frames into plaintext data frames. The MAC unit is for managing communication between communication devices within the WLAN network by coordinating access to a shared wireless communication medium through which communication signals are transmitted. The security enhancement unit and the MAC unit are adapted to perform an on-the-fly encryption process and/or on-the-fly decryption process thereby exchanging the encrypted data frames without buffering the encrypted data frames after encryption or prior to decryption, respectively. The embodiments may provide an improved encryption/decryption architecture including an on-chip memory for performing on-the-fly encryption and/or on-the-fly decryption in the framework of 802.11i security enhancement.

On-the-fly encryption/decryption for WLAN communications

A WLAN (Wireless Local Area Network) communication device including a first buffer, a second buffer and a shared backoff generator and corresponding methods and integrated circuit chips provided. The first buffer is for queuing first data packets to be transmitted by the WLAN communication device after a transmission channel has been idle for at least a first backoff time. The second buffer is for queuing second data packets to be transmitted by the WLAN communication device after the transmission channel has been idle for at least a second backoff time. The shared backoff generator is adapted to generate a first and a second backoff start value used to determine the first and second backoff times, respectively. Embodiments may reduce the hardware consumption and thus manufacturing and product costs.

The invention relates to an apparatus and a method for accessing memories having a time-variant response over a PCI bus by using two-stage DMA transfers. The invention provides a method for executing a read request over a PCI bus by transferring the requested data from a main memory of a PCI card to a device located on the PCI bus, comprising the steps of obtaining an access request from a read access queue, transferring, by a first DMA transfer, the requested data from the main memory to a buffer memory on the PCI card, and transferring, by a second DMA transfer, the data from the buffer memory to the device.
